“A rose,’”’ she said, “is like a beautiful, richly-dressed woman, so proud
she doesn’t speak to anyone. But behind her is a small creature with

“Yes, miss,” interrupted Tommy.

AID CONTROL OF .
FOREST FIRES
Aerial forest fire control in national forests of California will be
carried-on this summer with five airthe forest service. Regional Forester
S. B. Show announced that the planes, all privately owned, were contracted as part of the preparedness
plan for what may prove to be one
of this state’s most dangerous fire
seasons.
Three planes will operate for the
18 national forests from the Duck
hangars at the Oakland airport near
where the forest service supply base
at Government Island is located. Another plane will be located at Pomona and the fifth ship will be based
at Fresno airport. Each airplane is
equipped to carry forest service supervisory personnel or supplies to for.
est fire camps.
Largest of the planes is a_tri-motored Stinson with 780 horsepower
and a payload capacity of 1860
pounds. The two other planes worsing from Oakland are a four-place
Stinson Reliant cabin plane powered
with a 320 horsepower motor and a
Travelaire cargo. ship with a 330
horsepower motor.
Both the Pomona and Fresno
aerial fire control units are fourplace Stinson Reliant cabin planes,
245 horsépower motor.
The contract airplanes are e@uipped to deliver any kind of fire line
food and equipment by parachute.
Past and current field experiments
prove the efficient manner in which
national forest oficfers are able :o
service fire camps in inaccessible
mountain areas. Flying over fire
camps, pilots can drop packaged car_
go with common burlap parachutes.
In practical use of this method ac
the scenes of severe forest fires in
northern California last summer
little or no damage resulted to supplies dropped from less than 1000
feet above the ground. The Red Cap
fire in Klamath National Forest was
serviced with 80,000 pounds of supplies delivered by airplane.
Aerial delivery ‘methods have
been acclaimed invaluable in effecting earlier suppression of forest
fires than could be.expected from the
use of pack animals in many backwoods sections. Although aerial cargo delivery is twice as costly as servicing fire fighters by pack mules
or horses, results bear out the economy in saving extensive back-country
timber areas from rapidly spreading
fires.
Forest Service Patrol No. 1, the
only airplane ever purchased by the
forest service, is being assigned this
month to Portland from the Califormia region of the forest service where
during the past year it has taken part
in the development of all major experiments involving the use of aircraft in fire control. Many of the
municipal airports in the state have
at some ‘time witnessed various exmental projects in the delivery of
fireline supplies and other aerial fire
control developments.
