a CITY. NUGGET _ PAGE TWO Nevada City Nugget A Legal Newspaper, as defined by statute. Printed and Published at Nevada City. H. M. LEETE and C. B. ANDERSON Publishers Published semi-weekly, Monday and Friday, at Nevada City, California, and entered as maii matter of the second class in the postoffice at Nevada City, under Act of Congress, March 3, 1879. SUBCRIPTION RATES BUSINESS IS BETTER “How's business?" Optimistic replies to this stock inquiry of the past three years seem to have some foundation in fact at the present time, in the opinion of California editors. Nation-wide reports, they admit, point to an upward trend in-prices for farm commoditiés, increased shipping, higher wages and re-employment of many thousands. Stating there may be something more in the reports than just another effort to stiffen the backbone of Mr. Public, the Berkeley Daily Gazette adds: “There are signs, too, right in our own neighborhood, that cannot be put aside as meaningless. For instance, there has been a falling off in demands on our county charity funds, something that hasn't occurred in a long time and is certainly . significant of an improvement in employment.”’ As. another tavorable sign, according to theRiverside Daily Press, “‘business on the Great Lakes freight lines, quite Clearly, is better than it ‘was last year at this time. And you might remember that these lake steamers carry those bulk commodities—coal, iron ore and grain—whose movement is the very backbone of the nation’s business. If this improvement continues, a good deal of optimism will be justified.”’ “The: expected upturn in general business,’’ comments the Orange Daily News, “with increasing purchasing ‘power in the eastern markets, must be realized before any general advance in citrus prices can be expected, but it is apparent that the industry is in position to take advantage of improved condions. These factors make for a justified optimism.” And, remarks the Lindsay Gazette, ‘‘the orange grower will be able to borrow some money on his prospective cash. The bureau of agriculture is making that effective at once. Relief to the rancher is here—the country is up-grade. We'll all have money one of these days. Wouldn’t it do some of us good to have the bankers begging us to take their money? According to the Oroville Mercury-Register, “‘once the vicious circle of depression is broken everything adds to business rather than subtracting from it as in the past.’ With everyone buying supplies factories are at work and payrolls are expanded so that more can buy the supplies newly placed on the shelves. The fact that ‘almost everyone is low in supplies will add to the rush of business.” “The pendulum swings slowly ,of course,” said the Visalia Times-Delta. ‘“The effects of four years of disaster cannot be wiped out overnight. But there are good reasons for believing that the swing back in the right direction has actually commenced, and that if we are not yet out of the woods we . are at least getting to the point where a little more sunlight . filters down through the branches overhead. If we can just . keep from getting jittery we ought to make out all right. There is no sense, of course, in denying that some things look very discomforting. But unless we permit ourselves to get. scared out of our senses, we ought to be able to find the right road and stay on it.”’ a AS SET ET NSA NTs i a CL ARIMA SPRINGTIME IS PEP-UP-TIME. The business district of Alleghany, along with several homes, laid ashes by an incendiary! Some vengeful human being, or in cracked-brain, busy in the dark hours ! after midnight, starts a blaze that costs a community $150,000 threatens a horrible death to scores of sleeping people. And a few hours prior to this dastardly outrage, the Oriental mine is robbed of gold ore valued anywhere from $25,000 to $75,000. Two major crimes within the short time of 12 hours, committed in a little community of some 400 or 500 people! Years of planning and building destroyed in the twinkling of an eye. Unless the American people learn some method of protecting themselves against the destroyers, big criminals and little criminals, our civilization: will fall, as surely as every other civilization has fallen. The great cities of the country, . Yiddled and raddled with vice and crime. Yesterday’s paper reciting a horrible crime on the beautiful Stanford campus. Must this country eventually be forced to the drastic action of early California days? Must law abiding citizens organize in extra legal asso_ ciation to deal out rough handed justice to those who kill, main, burn, cheat, steal and rob? Is the greed of the Morgans and the Mitchells—a greed that makes 120,000,000: million people suffer— never to be sated, never to be halted? Thege are ,questions ,that arise When one thinks of the double blow that has been dealt the little sister city of Alleghany on the Mother Lode. Two crimes for which scores and hundreds must suffer. Crime. stalking through. the country, checked to be sure here and there. sporadically, but nevertheless rolling onward like a prairie fire. : oO The new home being erected in Glenbrook for Mr. and Mrs. August Corrini, by con‘ractor John Bestelsen ,is rapidly nearing completion and will be modern and up-to-date in every way .
