This is pointed out by Professor
Woodbridge Metcalf, extension forester in the University of Galifornia,
who says that walnut burls, crotches
and logs with ‘wavy and figured
grain are much in demand.
According to Professor Metcalf, a
lumber broker of Portland, Ore, whe
recently purchased the Lyman hybrid walnut tree of Yuba City, stated
that one tree may excell the value of
several acres of property and in some
instances a single tree has excelled
the value of the whole farm otherwise. This dealer is now negotiatdng for the purehase of the Schultz
tree near Arbuckle.
Black walnut is probably the most
valuable American hardwood Professor Metcalf says. Its wood has
recently there has been a substantial increase in the demand for this
fine wood. One tree n Chico, on the
property of Dr. Voorhies was recently sold for $1200. It weighed 17
tons and produced 164,000 square
feet of extra fine quality veneer.
