CITY NUGGET _ THURSDAY, JUNE. 21, 1945
NAVY’SFLOATING .
An exclusive U. S.
the unique. sectionally built
ant sesvice even a battleship, has
proven a major factor in keeping
homelann.
Described reiently by Viie Admiral
Ben Morell, the ships, some sections
of whiih have been ‘built by the Polliock-Stockton Shipbuilding Co. are
known as advance ‘base sectional,
docks—shoéfttened to ABSDs—they .
have capacities ranging from 56,000
to 100,000 tongs which is more than
enough capacity to raise the largest
‘battleship from the water to repair
battle damage.
Developed by the navy’s ‘bureau
of yards and docks, the ABSDs were
termed by Vice Admiral Moreell as
being to the fleet what field hospitals
are to the army, because a crippled
ship ean be taken into one of these
huge floating dry docks and repaired sufficiently to sent it back into
action, or tmporary repairs can be
made so that the vessel can reach 4
major navy yard safely.
Vice Admiral Moreell revealed that
ABSDs proved thevir-wotfth in the
Battle of Leyte Golf when three battleships were serviced in a forward
area, enabling those big ships to
take parts in this major sea _ battle
without the unique floating
dry docks, it would have been necessary to ‘bring the ships to the mainland for repairs.
Besides battleships,
serve smaller vessels and on one}
recent occasion two light cruisers .
were docked in one of the craft simultaneously. There have been times
when a half dozen large landing
the . ABSDs
'eraft ‘including LSTs have been serviced at one time. Altogether Vice
Admiral Moreel revealed, in a roeeae
eight months period the ABSDs hand-.
including one of our! led 176 ships,
large battleships.
The ABSD is an exclusive Ameri i
can development and no other navy}
has anything like it, Vice
Moreell said, and there can
doubt that in the future the ABSDs
and our gemaller floating dry docks
will play a vital role in saving baitle damaged ships and. keeping the
others in the peak of fighting trim.
Sections of the advance base sectional docks are built by the Pollock
Stockton .yard. Other sections are
built in Eureka, California, in Everett, Washington, Morgan City, La.,
and Pittsburgh, Penn. The sections
have lifting capacities of from §8,000 to 10,000 tons, They are taken

one man at sea, this was the astounding statement made this week by Lt.
(Margaret Moak of the Sacramento
Coast Guard recruiting station. With
every nine SPAIRS enlisted — one
more male Coast Guardsman can go
to sea. It is easy to see how necessary it is that many more northern
California women join the SPARS
now. More men are needed aboard
‘ship, but they cannot go until SPARS
are vailable to release them.
It takes a lot of recording, communicating, bookkeeping and typing
to keep ships and men of the Coast
Guard always ready to do their pobs.
SPARS are on duty in district offices of the Coast Guard and at the
training, shore and air __ stations,
communications eenters, small arms
repair and supply depots. They are
gradually taking over the detail of
the pay and supply section of the
service.
Many SPARS are now on duty in
the district offices in San Francisco.
Lt. Moak continued, but with the
trend of the war swinging to the
Pacific many more are needed. While:
stationed in San Francisco’ the
SPARS live in the beautiful SPAR
barracks at 940-Sutter St. formerly
the Empire Hotel. Many otherg live
in apartments and are entitled to
quarters and subsistence allowance.
