DEFINITELY HERE
The fire season is DEFINITELY
on in Nevada County.
Yesterday the state division of
forestry fire fighting crews were
called out on three fires and early
Saturday morning the fire fighters
were called to the blaze which destroyed the Alta Hill Grocery and
Service Station.
The most serious of the three fires
yesterday was the one which destroyed the garage ‘and an automobile at
the Phillips Ranch in Gold Flat. The
other two were minor grass fires.
The Alta Hill Grocery Store fire
routed the owner, Ray Vroman and
his son, who were sleeping in the
rear of the store. Nothing was saved
by the Vromans. Loss.was estimated
at about $4,000. The origin of the
fire is not known.
Harboring Fusive
Charge Filed Against
Grass Valley Man
Emmet J. Seawell, assistant United States attorney in Sacramento,
has filed a complaint in the federal
. court against Joseh Dechene of Grass
Valley, Nevada County, on the charge
of harboring a fugitive.
Dechene was taken into custody by
agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation when they searched his
home and found Jack Stahl, 34, his
soh in law, hiding in a cupboard.
Stahl was wanted on a charge of
driving a stolen automobile from
Reno to Grass Valley last Saturday.
Stahl was arrested in Grass Valley on Sunday. He com ined of being ill and while in ees in
Nevada City jumped from a window
and made his escape:
The FBI agents went to his father
in law's home and Dechene denied
that Stahl was there. The officers
. said he permitted them to search the
house and that one of them saw a
suspicious pair.of shoes below sonie
clothing hanging in the cupbord.
They discovered Stahl hiding behind
the clothing.
Seawell said the complaint against
Dechene is.indicative of the government’s determination to’ prosecute
anyone who harbors a violator of
federal laws. He said this case points
ee to selective service law
lviolators who are known by their
. friends or families to be fugitives.
He said those harboring draft violators will be prosecuted to the fulle evtent of the law.
