23, 1930 . HAPPENINGS OF THE PAST WEEK OF VICINITY EE MAS BIRTHDAY _ Miss Rachel Penrose, popular employee of the local P. G. & E. office, recently celebrated her birthday and a group of her friends gath_ ered at ter home on Nevada Street . ‘and helped her make the occasion a memorable one. Those in attendance . were the group of Pocahontas Girls ' and group of line man who are in _ this city with the interest of the eompany in erecting the new street aight system. Games. were played and _ before time for the ‘‘homeward”’ departure light refreshments were served. Miss Penrose received many vaulable gifts and The Nugget office joins in ‘wishing her many additional happy Ddirthdays. EVANGELINE CHAPTERS HOLDS S7TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY " Last Tuesday evening Evangeline Chapter O. E. S. held a social meeting last Tuesday evenin. in honor of the 57th anniversary of their charter. A~-short--program included a gracious speech of. welcome by the Worthy Matron, Mrs. Alice Hitchens and solos by Mrs. Lydia Talbot and Mrs. Gove Celio. Cards and dancing were enjoyed by the members and their guests aftter which ice efeam and cake were served. All agreed that the evening was an exceptionally pleasant one. SHISHIVA CAMPFIRE GIRLS ARE TO BE DISBANDED The Shishiva Campfire Girls held a meeting at the Methodist Church on Saturday evening for the purpose of disbanding as there are now only four girls left in the high school of the original sixteen girls, the others having graduated from-high school. The four remaining girls, Betty Bettles, Margaret Rector, Ruth Noyes and Gertrude will unite with the other high school ‘group. At the meeting Saturday night the girls presented their beloved guardian, Miss Elizabeth Janes with a. silver compact in appreciation of her arduous work in their behalf for the past two years. MISS SCARFF WEDS AT CHURCH AFFAIR IN SAN FRANCISCO The wedding of Miss Bessie Belle), Scarfe and Harvey Lewis Jacobson took place in San Francise at St. John’s Presbyterian church. Rey. Lloyd Carrick officiated and the bride was given in marriage by her father. An informal reception was enjoyed at the church at the conclusion of the ceremony followinge which the bridal couple and members of the party enjyed a dinner dance in the Italian room at the Hotel St. Frantis. : ? They. will reside in San Francisco. J. M. WALLING HONORED ON HIS 89TH BIRTHDAY J. M. Walling was honored on his 89th birthday Saturday by a dinner at the family home on Piety Hill. ‘Those present, besides his family were James Allen, another Civil War veteran and Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Jacobsen and daughter, Iola Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Ninnis and Miss Ada Rich. ; ( Two young boys, Clemens Organ and Ernest Young, called on Judge Walling with a small gift, accompanied by a greeting card and paid. MARTINS HAVE RETURNED (Continued from’ ‘page One). stay with us until their young were large enough to take care of themselves—usually about the latter part of July. The martins are sociable fellows and are always together. -They do not nest in single pairs but im little clonies seek the abode of mankind for their home. There is a picturesque old inn beside a post road in New Jersey with a five-storied martin house set up on a pole above its quaint, swinging sign. For more tham 30 years a record was kept on this pole showing the dates of the coming and going of the martins in April anl September, which did nt vary more than two or three days during that time. “Many people, who are only just beginning to realize how much good these birds do in ridding-the air of mosquitoes and other flying pests, are putting up boxes for them in order to get them to make their hmes with us, for it is believed that they can be induced to return again in as great numbers as they formerly did.
