The inspiration of his eloquence was the fact that a little while earlier he had been fired out of a saloon head first. EPO Louis Francots of Grass Valley has sent to this office a sample bottle of his vegetable syrup for coughs, colds, etc., the same being on sale at different stores throughout the county. Sion Fountain Mabley, aged about 25 years, was killed at 9 o’clock yesterday morning while working inthe Charoonat mine near this city. He walked up to the fifteenth level from below, to exchange the drills he had been using for some newly sharpened ones. Instead of passing around the pump-bob and entering the station ftom the . side, he pulled himself up over the highest side of the platform. Just as he did so anempty car came down the incline and upon the platform, jamming him against a cross-bar placed at the side where he had climbed Up to prevent the cars from being accidentally dropped” too far and thus continuing over the platform down the incline below. Theunfortunate, man was pinned fast between the bar and ear, crushing his. chest and breaking his neck. There stood in the drift close by-the station Al. Lamping and David Eddy, carmen, and Charles Kahl, a_ miner. They gave the alarm and as quickly’as possible extricated the body from its awful situation. Death was instantaneous. The remains were brought to Mobley’s home. on Coyote street, this city, and an inquest was held, Justice Sowden presiding as coroner. A verdict of accidental death was returned by the jury. The deceased leaves a widow and an infant child, he having been two years married to a daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Richard Dillon of this city. His mother keeps ® boarding house at Malakoff. Mrs. T. P. Crandall and Mrs. Jay Ostrom of North Bloomfield are his sisters. He has a brother living at the latter place. He belonged to Nevada City Council, Ameri¢an Legion of Honor, his life being insured for $3,000 therein. He was also a member of Nevada Light Guard. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at two o’clock from the Congregational Church. Mr. Mobley, who came to this city from North Bloomfield where he was engaged in mining, had worked a year and a half in the Vharonnat mine. He possessed the esteem of all who knew him, being ayoung man of industrious habits-and good morals. «Net so Funny After All, A few days ago an item about a Nevada county surveyor getting “hung” on a picket fence while climbing over it, was published in this paper and created considerable amusement. It now-turns out that the incident was not quite so much of a joke as at first considered. The surveyor has been growing sorer in his side daily since it occurred, and Wednesday evening called in a physician to examne him when it was discovered that his fourth rib on the right side is fractured, as a consequence of his being brought forcibly, against the fence when ‘checked in his headlong descent by his coat-tail catching on a picket. me Death From Heart Disease. Mamie E. King, who has unfil quite recently been a pupil in the public schools of this city, and was to have graduated at the end of the present year, died Tuesday at the home of her mother in You Bet, the cause of death being heart disease. .She was buried Wednesday alongside her father in the graveyard at Red Dog. Miss King was almost seventeen years ol age, and was a girlof much promise. . « a eer Death of a Pioneer. Charles Jenkins, who was one of the pioneer quartz miners-of the Grass Valley district, died at Salem, Massachusetts, on the 18th of November. Mr. Jenkins became an owner in the Empire mine,in Ophir Hill, in 1852, and retained an ownership in 1864. After the mine ceased to be remunerative Mr. Jenkins returned East, where he took uv his permanent residence, going overland on the first through overland passenger train. >_> Phoenix Mine. Tidings: A crushing of 24 loads of ore from the ledge in the shaft of the Phcenix mine has just been completed in the Rocky Bar mill. Ihe ore yielded $28 per load, which was a great deal more than was expected from the shaft rock. The crushing of fribute ore from the, same mine has now commenced. ites EE eS A cLEAR head is indicative of good health and regular habits. Sheriff Inlow arrived here yesterday and served papers on Campbell, Rigby and Devere for an alleged contempt of the Superior Court of Yuba county for violating a debris injunction. The parties have been retaining all the debris by a system of dams and are complying strictly with the decision of the Supreme Court. The action of the managers Of the Anti-Debris Association of Marysville in endeavoringto persecute and harrass the people of this section is strongly condemned. me McSnorter at Bloomfield. A gentleman who .came down from North Bloomfield yesterday says that MecSnorter of the Marysville Democrat has been hanging around there for two or three days past. According to our informant, the great. man announces publicly to the Bloomfielders that he is not among them as a apy upon their actions, but that he is trying to find out what the two spies sent there by the Anti-Debris Associa+ tion are doing as an equivalent for the salary promised them. McSnorter claims he can prove that one of the anti-slickens spies who spends a good deal of time in this county gets hush money in sums. of from $100 to’ $500 per month from certain hydraulic mining companies, and that the fellow is thus drawing money from both sides of the cause at the same time. Mc. values the property on which he pays taxes in Yuba county at $6,000, and he. swears that he is going to try to ‘bust up’’ the gang of cormorants that are raiding the county treasury in the name of the anti-miners, In Memoriam. Thousands upon thousands of blood-thirsty and well-armed Mongols can be emptied upon our shores on short notice he says, and they would quickly devastate the blooming land if once they fairly set about it. His paper calls upon the Chinese in America to.arm to the teeth and prepare to defend themselves against any violent and unlawful assault; and he claims that in San Francisco” they have already done so.
