trum and to tens of tha:sends over the air: and it is to answer
that curiosity, that a few descriptive words, poor and inade-,
quate though they be. are expressed here.
This British scienti-t and Tewish statesman was born 67
years ago in a little Russian village. Motele, near Pinsk. In
those days, the biblical precept of Abraham to be fruitful and
multiply, was taken as a solemn injunction; hence Chaim
Weizmann was born one of fifteen children, eleven of whom
survive.
Because of his international repute as a Zionist leader,
Dr. Weizmann is sometimes thought of as a Jewish careerist.
Heaven forbit!—and by the grace of providence, it was forbidden. He was destined by nature to be a worker in the laboratory of nature—a biochemist—for the beneficial enjoyment of man. And a renowned worker in the laboratories of
nature. he became; so much so, that after taking his two
academic degrees at the German Universities of Freiberg and
Berlin, he qualified as a teacher of his science, first at Geneva
University and later at Manchester University.
If science was Dr. Weizmann’'s profession, Zionism was
his passion, or better still, in the language of John Gunther,
“the was a chemist bv dav and a Zionist by night.”
Many men have talent. but few have greatness; and_
when an individual has both, he naturally excites the curios.

One incident in his life, at the age of 42, illustrates why .
Dr. Weizmann is not only gifted but great — perhaps the
world’s greatest living Jew. In 1916, Britain was facing a.
dangerous shortage of “‘acetone.’’ an indispensable chemical
to the manufacture of high exnlosives. In that dark. hour of
World War I, Prime Minister-Lloyd George summoned Dr.
Weizmann from Manchester University, where he was professor of chemistry. Dr. Weizmann accepted the challenge. He
was put in charge of the “Admiralty Laboratories,’ and after
laboring day and night for one month, he produced a synthetic acetone,” assuring Britain of an adequate supply of explosives for the duration of the war.
Britain was gratified and grateful. Lloyd George again
summoned him—for the testimonial. He could have title or
money. Measured by his country’s traditions, the temptation
to succumb to the nersonal glamor or increased comforts was
terrific. But he had a passion that reached bevond himself—Gilbert, William Kitto, deceased. C.

a passion which John Gunther said had consumed him bv
night. It was a passion to give his afflicted people a homeland .
in Palestine. And’so this was the only reward he asked for his!
beneficial discovery; and this was the reward that was granted on November 2, 1917, through the historic issuance of the .
Balfour Declaration.
For Dr. Chaim Weizmann, that was the commencement,
not the end. The genius of his science helped to reclaim the.
soil; and the greatness of his spirit helped to redeem his peo-'
ple. Today, at 67, he is again doing important research for his’
country in his special ‘‘Admiralty Laboratories,” and at the,
same time, hoping, as Moses hoped, to bring his homeless!
brethren of Europe to the Promised Land.

. THE RIGHT TO WORK
3 3 .
“When he cleared the picket lines at Inglewood, the presi-:
dent was declaring and enforcing the right of any man to hold’
his job,’ declares Justus Craemer in his Orange Daily News.
“It is fundamental in the law that every man has the right to!
strike in time of peace, though there may be a question of that
right in times of national peril. It is equally fundamental in the .
Bill of Rights that a man has a right to work.”
