A BRIGHTER MINING OUTLOOK: °
PREDICTED BY MAGAZINE
“With the oil wells on down

the opening of past famous gold producers. Among the splendid pictures
throughout the magazine are a great

Texas Flat mine in its day, was
one of the most productive gold
mines in what was then Fresno county. This is one of the _ possibilities
of an old district being brought. back
by opening up of its historical mine.
It mentions Poker Flat, the scene
of Bret Hart’s most famous story.
This old camp has come to life, but
instead of Shaggy, -red-shirted miners, with their shovels and gold pans,
a steel monster driven by eletricity
is digging down under’ the shallow
water.
It is estimated that the ‘electrical has ben opened up on a cross-cut .

FINDS MINE AFTER
ABSENCE OF MANY YEARS
An old prospector named Turney
walkel into Forks of Salmon a few
days ago wearing a happy smile and
his first words were, ‘Well,
found it.’”” About 30 years ago he
uncovered some rich pay dirt on
Specimen Creek and now after 30
years absence has uncovered it again.
About the time he. first
this ground he went on a visit to
relatives and for years prospected jin
Idaho and Montana.
He had always kept in mind this
rich ground on Specimen Creek so
laf winter he returned and has heen
waiting for the snow tv go off in order that he could look for the old
diggings. He took another man with
him and for days they searched but
he was unable to locate the old
claim. Finally his partner found other employment. Turney continued to
search until he was rewarded by locating the mine he had _ located
many years ago.
From a pan that he took from the
ledge he found ten o1
fifteen small nuggets and a string of
fine gold. The ledge has a hard gray
porphry hanging wall, while the foot
wall is dyorite, with iron cubes and
a stain of silverin the ore. The
ledge is from eighteen inches to two
feet at the top.
Turney returned to Forks of Salpurpose of building a trail
property, so he can get provisions
in. From all indications ‘he has
struck a rich ledge. He has been a
prospector for many years and made
some good strikes in early days. He
says there are many good ledges in
the Salmon river section and if a
prospector will take an outfit and
to the
almost sure to strike a good ledge.

Slate Ranze on’ his claims which he
started to tunnel last season. This is
in. a very rugged country and it is
difficult work doing development
work, being extremely hard to get
supplies to the property. This is wie
third season that Mr. Kelly has worked at this in an extensive maniier.
Henry Rabe is still forging ahead
in his tunnel at his quariz property
near the.Sleighville House. If the
rock contiues good. Mr. Rabe will
probably put upa small mill to
handle the ore.
Although not as_ noticable as in
the days’ of forty-nine, the lure of
the yellow dust still pushes many a
soul into the wilds, and he who
braves the hardships connected with
this vocation, risks his safety, works
long hours, and waits another day to
reach the desired goal, whether he
be a lone, nature loving prospector
“river rat’’ as some of his unfortunate brothers term him, or the finan. cler who is willing to put up his
;money and take a chance on strike .
