TO SINGLE TAX SAN FRANCISCO, June 25.—Proponents of the so-called ‘“‘Sales Tax Repeal’ or “Single Tax’’ ber general election, met a rebuff today at the hands of George Sehlmeyer, Master of the California State Grange. Sehlmeyer, reached at Lebanon, where he is attending a meeting of the Oregon State Grange, refuted recent statements that he is one of the sponsors of the ‘Single Tax’’ amendment. “Current reports in. the _ press,” said Sehlmeyer, ‘‘that I am a ‘leader in the movement for repeal of the state sales tax and substitution of the single tax’ are definite and deliberate untruths, sponsored by the bauckers of the ‘single tax’-proposal. “T am now, and always have been unalterably opposed to the ‘single tax’, or to any other tax: which would place additional and unbearable burdens on agriculture. “Few people are aware that ‘sales tax repeal’ is not the real question at stake in this matter. Rather, perennial sponsors of the completely discredited ‘single: tax’ ‘have seen ‘there-a chance to plant .their pet theory in California craftily attaching it as a rider_to a sales tax repeal proposal. The State Grange has not been an advocate of. sales tax, but we must be unequivocally for it, if its repeal means substitutition of a ‘single tax’ on land, a tax which would add over three hundred million dollars to -the annual tax load now carried on land in California. “Farmers are not theorists; they can’t afford to be. And California battle for the past several years to secure the present measure of stab. ility in their industry, will not be ‘inclined at this point to relinquish . those gains, merely to’ try out a amend-. ment, to be voted on at the Novem-. farmers, who have fought an uphill’ . theory which has failed in every . MAYGASTAX OVER 3 MILLION SACRAMENTO, June 25.—Continuing the steady increase which has prevailed for the past year, California’s gasoline taxes for May will provide $3,677,425.18 according to an announcement made here today y Richard E. Collins, chairman of the State Board of Equalization. Analyzing the assessments just completed by ‘the board, Collins pointed out that the taxable gasoline for last month exceeded that of 1935, by more than 3,700,000 gallons with the result that last month’s tax will be $110,452.88 more than . the eorresponding tax of a year This marked a gain of 3.1 per cént. “Although it has been predicted in some quarters that the gain in gasoline distributions) could not continue so long, there has been steady improvement in this business as ‘established by tax returns, for the past seventeen months. Ever since December 1934, the figures for eack. month have shown an increase over those for the same month of the preceding year. “Because they are based directly on the gallons sold, gasoline taxes are an unusually accurate barometer of business conditions. I think it can be concluded from these. statistics that there has been a definite turn for the better.” spot on the globe where it has been attempted. ; : “War from being a leader in the ‘single tax’ movement, I am a’ director of the California Association Against the Single Tax, which is organized to defeat the ill founded and completely discredited ‘single tax,” whose only hope of success in Cali— fornia is in, its flagrant misrepresentation as ‘sales tax repeal’.’’ “Private-«“Property—No Trespassing’’ signs for sale at the Nugget Cifice.
