SCOUT CAMP TO HAVE MANY IMPROVEMENTS A water system,platforms for tents and an improved swimming hole are among, the improvements planned for Camp Pahatsi this summer. MOTOR SERVICE ON NAROW GAUGE JULY 1 A new and faster service to . meet trains at Colfax will be inaugurated by the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad on July 1st, when the motor coach recently acquired will be put in service. This service will undoubtedly prove popular as many have been heretofore forced to drive to Colfax r Sacrament to meet passenger trains on the Southern Pacific. : The motor car will leave Nevada City at 10:00 a. m., Grass Valley at 10:20 making connections with Southern Pacific No. 19 which leaves Colfax at 11:35 a. m.-arriving San Francisco at 5:30 p. m. Here are some new _ ones, which we all like: : = Candied Yams.—Take six sticks of ; Upholstering old-fashioned cinnamon candy pulverized. Yum, yum—can’t you remember when a stick of candy was a great treat? Dice six marshmallows and chop four ounces of Brazil nuts. Slice six medium-sized cooked sweet potatoes and place in a buttered baking dish, sprinkle with some of the marshmallows, dot with butter, using two tablespoonfuls to the dish; add some from a half cupful of raisins, the pulverized candy to which has been added one-half cupful of brown sugar. . Repeat until all the ingredients are used, having a layer of marshmallows on top. Bake in the oven until it is ; a delicate brown. It is well worth aj trial. Patty Shells With Nut Clusters.— ELKS SPORTSMEN’S CLUB Walter Skotland of Oakland is in Grass Valley in the interest of the Sportsmen’s Club in the Greenhorn district. The club is anxious to-sign as many local Elks into membership as possible and the final drive is now on. During the summer a good many are expected to avail themselves of an outing at the club and much work will be done to put the grounds and buildings in good condition. PERSONAL MENTION Mrs. Gilbert Gildersleeve and sister, Mrs. Maurice Kennely, have returned to their-homes in Oakland and Stockton respectively after a three weeks’ visit in Nevada City as the guests*of Mr-~and Mrs. Gildersleeve. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hartman and little daughter, Betty, returned — to their home in Oakland after a ten day vacation spent in and around Nevada City, enjoying to the limit the mountains and pines and a two day fishing trip to Downieville where Mr. Hartman caught his limit of speckled beauties-in-a short time. They were house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. C. Perry: The Misses Lucille and Maurene Perry, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. C. Perry left for the bay region to spend. their vacation. While OnakMrs. F. S. Hartman. Wesley Perry arrived last week from Utah, to spend his vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. C. Perry. He also has just completed his second year in the study of linohis first trip to California and he is very much taken up. with the country. Jacob Kieffer, an old resident of Downieville, passed through Nevada City on his way to Downieville. Miss Gertrude Paine, who is a member of the teaching staff of the Sebastopol school, is spending her vacation in this city with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert. Paine. Miss Nan O'Neill, who has been spending the past two weeks with {relatives in this city, left for Berkeley to enter the University of Califora summer session. Principal B. F. Wilson and Mrs. Wilson have taken. their departure for Berkeley where they will spend ithe summer months. Ponta had been named traffic officer for Sierra County by the Motor Vehicle Department. Ponta, who has had years of experience as a stage driver on mountain roads, is the logical choice for the appointment. He leaves on July 1st -for Sacramento; ‘where he will enter the training school for traffic officers before donning his uniform. Put one cupful of nut ¢luster eandy ; through the food chopper, add one cupful of whipped cream and a few drops of almond flavoring. Heap in pastry shells and serve well ehilled. One may use smal] cup cakes hollowed out instead of the pastry shells, which will be better if children are to be served. Butterscotch Pucding.—Mix one cupful of brown sugar, three tablespoonfuls of flour, two beaten eggs, stir well, then add one pint of rich milk and ‘cook until smooth in a double boiler. Just before taking from the fire add one-half cupful or more of fine. His father, the late John O’Conner, while in the employ of the P. G. & E. of Colgate, was ac-_ cidentally electrocuted about 15 years ago. Another of our old residents has crossed the Great Divide. Francis M. Tuckitt, who was born and had spent nearly all his life on the San Juan Ridge, passed away at SacramentaSunday afternoon.
