a e Aeterna att maser ep facktachapspihaietrtia a THE NEVADA CITY NUGGET FRIDAY JUNE 30, 1933 Nevada City Nugget 305 Broad Street. Phone 36 .A Legal Newspaper, as defined by statute. ; lished at Nevada City. Printed and PubH. M. LEETE and C. B. ANDERSON........ .-Publishers Published semi-weekly, Monday and Friday, at Nevada City, California, and entered as mail matter-ef the second class in the postoffice at Nevada City, under Act of Congress, March 3, 1879. . SUBCRIPTION RATES RO VOT ae a ee $2.00 J _ WHAT ONE BANKER THINKS OF GOLD MINING The president of a large national bank in Chicago was under criticism by several banks because of his investment in a gold and copper mine, says the Mountain States Mineral Age. He made the following reply: “Throughout the Rocky Mountains ages ago God Almighty built stronger vaults in His granite banks than we have in ours. He filled his banks with gold, silver and copper; He gave the prospector knowledge and insight and guided him on his way to the door of the vaults He had built. The federal government handed him a title to all herein. It is not a crime to enter, but a virtue. With drill, pick, spade and blast, the prospectors have broken the combination locks and entered. But for Him, our notes and issues would be as the “slump tailed’ currency of 1857. But for Him this government of ours would be bankrupt. “A mine contains a crop already raised, harvested and on deposit for you to check against at your pleasure. The wealth gathered from the mines immortalized King Solomon. Mines made Great Britain the world’s commercial dictator. Mining has made the United States the richest country in the world. Show me a country without mines, and I will show you a people sunk in poverty and degradation, making cowards of individuals. “Mining has transformed: more poor men into millionaires and raised them to positions of honor and trust than any other business. Mining has scored less than 60 per cent of the failures against 95 per. cent of failures of the general merchandise business of the United States.”—-Western Mineral Survey. NORTH BLOOMFIELD . By MRS. RALPH PENROSE NORTH BLOOMPTIELD, Mr. Harold Coombs came down from Graniteville where he has been working, to serve at the ‘polis. He was the clerk of the board. The earthquake of last Sunday was quite severe in North Bloomfield. Mrs. J. Miller and son, Edgar, with Mrs. Carl Larson, were North Bloomfield visitors last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Bowser and children of Richmond are visitors at North Bloomfield, Mrs. R. Penrose, Misses Phyllis Anderson, Corrine Anderson and M. Newton, went fishing yesterday. They wanted cat fish to put in the old swimming hole to keep it clean of water bugs. o —Your Home Town Paper--NUGGET NUGGETS EXHIBITED June 28——. WEEKLY _ COMMENT By CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN COPENHAGEN DENMARK.—I have been here riow for-about two weeks and -although this is a nice country I wish I was coming. down the gangplank in New York. Of course, I. fully expected to be feted while here but they turned loose all of their entertainment geinus until I am worn out with parties, dinners, lunceons, ete. King Kristian the X invited me to tea the other afternoon in the royal palace ,this was a very informal affair and I met a lot of the Danish Bigwigs. Kris made me feel very much at home and after a few little drinks of the justly famous danish BRAENDEVIN we were most chumy and seeing that we were both named ‘Kristian in Danish we just dropped the formalities. From then, on it was Kris this and Kris that. But all things must’ come to an end, of course I am not in Denmark at al) but just wanted to see how it would look to have a foreign headline to this column. : Some time ago when I leased a large piece of placer ground from the Perigo Mines southwest. of Boulder Colorado, I had with me as a partner 4% young mining enginger whose fictitious name was Fred Mes= singale. FROM MIDDLE YUBA Mrs. Elsie Prentiss and Mrs. Loraine Paselk were in Nevada City last week exhibiting two small bottles of nuggets that they had panned on the Middle Fork of the Yuba ‘by Stawberry Bar. Assisted bytheir husbands the two women report that they have panned anywhere from $1.50 to $2.00 a day for the past Several weeks, The Ladies Aid Society gave their annual picnic at the Day’s Ranch, Gold Flat, on Wednesday, for the members and their children. Everyone had a grand time swimming and playing games. Fine things to eat capped the most successful affair.
