Here in the United States, where the maintenance of gold production, to say nothing of its increase, must.be made possible chiefy by the discovery of new orebodies: underground, it is essential that existing mines, continue exploration. A new country with vast unexplor-! ed regions can expect to maintain gold production by developing and exploiting new surface discoveries, but in the United States, where most of the gold production comes form mining camps established before the 20th century, it is imperative that producing gold mines bé kept profitable so that additiona] ore reserves Can be developed by the extension of their underground workings. COSTS OF PRODUCTION Statistics of costs of gold mining operations in the United States sow and based upon the present’ production of about $50,000,000 annually, that an increase of from 6 to 10 percent in the cost of operations will reduce gold production: by about $30,000,000 annually, 60 per cent. : During the World War, when the average price of wage level and sup_ plies more than doubled, the American gold miner received no subsidy. or sof industry. Last year, in spite of important develepmetns in the Philippine gold mines. the United -States, as a gold producer, was forced from second to third place by Canada. ; WORLD PRICE NEEDED If the gold miners of this country are permitted to export their newlymined gold and receive the world market price thereon the growth of the industry will be rapid and it un_ deubtedly will experience the greatest prosperity in its history.
