LOUIS VEIN With the steady installation of surface equipment the Canada Hill mine, being rehabilitated. by West Mines Corporation, presents a rapidly changing picture. The new electric hoist has been housed and is ready for operation, replacing the gasoline hoist that has been in use, and the new compressor has been set on concrete base. A.new pump is expected to be ready for service shortly. Clearing of the old shaft has pro_ ceeded to a depth of 210 feet. The amount of water the mine is making at present is considerably less than was anticipated and a more substantial flow has been encountered above the operations, evidently supported by*’caved materials. The sills of the old sets were found to be in good condition and are being utilized in’ the retimbering work, indicating that they have been under water since the cave. tI is expected that the crew, working under Orlando McCraney, managing director, will be in the open shaft within ten days o rtwo weeks when unwatering of th emine:will begin and work will be on a much more rapid scale. While reconditioning of the shaft continues, it is planned to put the sixth level -into shape for mining a block of ore reported as having been developed there. sible a cut’ will lower-level: As early as: posbe driven from a to the great St. Louis vein, a vein hitherto untapped in the Canada Hill holdings although heavyily productive in adjoining properties. : SE aCe Sf, oe ee Not Superstitious About Ladders, Just: Cautious SACRAMENTO, June 5— (UP)— Women superstitious? No, indeed, just cautious. Workmen ona dowtown business street here recently propped a ladder up against a building placing the lower end of it exactly in the middle of the side walk. A curious observer kept tally on the passing pedestrians. A ten-minute checkup gave the following results: Of 46 women passing that point 24 carefully walked around so as not to pass under the ladder, while 38 of the 61 men did likewise. Twenty-three men walked under the ladder deliberately but the 12 women were believed to be window shopping and failed to see it. Polling place School House. Inspector—Florénce Hatcher.
