WAR WORKERS
IN CALIFORNIA
SAN FRANCISCO, June 7.—Employment in California manufacturing industries during April rose to
1,089,000,. an increase of 48 per cent
over April of last year in number
of wage earners and a gain of S80
per cent in total payrolls, according
to the current ‘report of economic
conditions just issued by the research
department of the California State
Chamber of Commerce.
Augmented consumer buying power resulting from the continued increase in industrial activity is reflected in the current high level of
retail sales. Sales of independent
‘California retailers during the first
. quarter of this year averaged 19 per
. cent greater than for the same period
ilast year. Sales of liquor stores ag. gregated 61 per cent more than for
the first quarter in 1942; dry goods
and general merchandise sales stores 54 per ¢ent; eating and drinking
places 47 per cent! jewelr stores 43
per cent; and the food group 37 per
cent. On the other hand sales of
building materials and hardware
stores, the house furnishing group,
and the automotive group have dropped below last year by everal points.
According to the state chamber
report the influence of weather on
crops and outdoor operations was
more favorable during the first half
of May than for the several weeks
preceding. The cold weather has prolonged the harvest of those truck
crops now matured, principally lettuce,, potatoes and peas.
Because of the shortage of farm
labor and the high wage rate required to harvest crops: some plantings originally intended for market
are being diverted to seed or dehydration outlets for which labor. requirements are lower and less exacting. Farm wage rates, per day without board, averaged $5.90 in April
1, 1948, as compared with $3.90 a
year ago, an increase of 51 per cent.
Crop reports as of May 1, indicate
increased 1943 production as compared with last year for apples,
grapes, pears, prunes, flaxseed, and
hay, but decreased production for
almonds, apricots, cherries, peaches,
plums, walnuts, wheat, barley and
oats. Conditions of pastures, ranges
and livestock continues good.
The ggneral level of farm prices
continued to advance from March to
April, Prices received by growers
for eighteen farm products of the
thirty five reported showed increases; twelve no change; and the re. . maining five slight decreases. When
compared with prices received a year
ago, practically all of the thirty five

gains. Cash income from farm marketings continued to increase somewhat more than seasonally in. March.
The current rise in prices of farm
products will result in further inerease in farm income for April.

To Hasten Victory
No American wants this war
to go one minute beyond the
time we can bring it to a victericus end. To hasten that
victory—to save possibly the
lives of millions of our boys
on our far flung fronts—it is
imperative that every American do his part in the Second
War Loan. There is an investment to fit every purse.
The most you can do is little
enough compared with the sacrifice offered by our boys in
service. They give their lives
—you lend your money.
