Flag Contest of
Flag Assodfion
The first annual
the United States
is to be held this spring. This contest is open to all boys and girls
who have not yet graduated from
high school and are between fourteen and eighteen years of age. The
Hearst news papers aye sponsoring
this contest and are offering very
attractive awards. The awards are
to be divided into three classes—-local, regional, and national. The
award for the winners -of the local
contest, a boy and a girl, will each
our school at the regional contest.
The winners of that contest will
be given a free trip to Washingtén, a seholarship, and will take
part in¢the national contest. The
winners of the final contest will be
given a trip around the world.
Such awards are certainly worth
striving for.
The contest will consist of three
parts: the answering of seventy-five
the writing
of a composition on the subject,
“Old Glory’s Greatest Glory”, and
the presentation of this composi‘ion orally. The auestions can be
found in the San Francisco Examiner.
We hope that the students of
the high school will show more interest in this contest than they have
so far. It is necessary, to have
twenty-five participants registered
by March 14, and at present only
sixteen have ‘signed up. Come on,
kids, show some ambition!

SPANISH CLUB
prisenee Laine
Miss Whelan has_organized the
Spanish II class into a Spanish club
which consists of thirty-five members. During the meetings which
will be held ‘during school hours,
only the Spanish language will be
spoken. The ¢lub will also hold sevral social meetings. in the evenings.
At their last meeting the following
officers were elected: Addison
Janes, president; Deynes Foley ,secretary, and Cecelia Genasci, treasurer. The students get a “big kick”
out of talking in Spanish, and it also teaches them to
Spanish more freely. A greater interest has developed in the Spanish
eliiss since the
elub.
BABY PICTURES FOR QUILL
The editor of the “Quill’ is working desperately to secure baby pictures of the members: of the senior
class and faculty. So far she has
been able to obtain pictures of only
the girl members. of the class. We
wonder if the boys and the faculty
members were ever babies?
The costumes of the senior babies
consist of many types, but all of
them carry our thoughts to babyhood days. The faces of these baby
pictures resemble the present owners
to a very marked degree.
Nearly all the babies have a seriour look on their faces which. shows
how children change as they grow
older. Miriam Sawyer, however, is
smiling. It has not been learned
yet why she is smiling, but it may
be beeause the little bird in the
eamera flew away.
OLD FASHIONED SPELLING
held an
organization of the
Tuesday, Miss Hoffman
i old fashioned. spelling contest in her
English classes. The students were
lined up along the wall. and the
words were dictated by Miss Hoffman. Each one who misspelled the
word given him took his seat. As
all the classes were spelled down
quickly they ‘had time for two contests each. In the .morning class of
sophomores, Elizabeth Thomas won
‘contest one and tilly Jeffrey contest two; in the afternoon class,
Ruth Noyes won contest one anil
Lionel Davies contest .two. In the
first junior section Kathlyn Greenaway won contest one and Thetma
Roreham contest two; in the second
junior. section Grace Towle won
‘fhoth contests. In the senior ¢ciass.
Naney Jones won contest one and
Alberta Baker contest twwo. The
words were very catchy, and everyone enjoyed testing his spelling
bility.

On Monday morning, March 4, we
had a radio at school so that the
entire student body might listen to

The program came over very
clearly and was much. enjoyed. The
speeches and other events ‘were discussed in many of the classes. The
history and sociology classes were
required to take’ notes. We are
very grateful to Mr. Elkus for installing the radio for us.
SOPHOMORE PARTY HELD
The sophomore party was held
Friday night, March 8. The admission was twenty-five cents each. The
deorations were in St. Patrick's color with green shamrocks. The soph
omores served pineapple ice and
eookies eut like shamrocks. The
sophomores are quite proud of
their party and certainly cannot be
blamed for this feeling:
Mrs. Herbert Paine has accepted
a position with Dr. R.F. Werner
