The results of the tests, which were conducted at the Rare and Precious *Metals Experiment Station of the-' United States Bureaun of Mines, Reno, Nevada, in cooperation with the University of Nevada, are given in a paper on eentrifrugal concentration which will shortly be issued by the Bureau. This paper will consist of a review of previous efforts to develop certifugal concentrators, an exposi tion of the theoretical aspects of the subjects, and a detailed deseription
of the construction and . operation of several new types of centrifugal concentrators, Experiméntal include those obtained laboratory models and also with « machine of semi-commercial size operating under both laboratory and plant conditions. 1 The for results with small centrifuge makes. available concentration a_ foree severa’ hundred times as powerful as gravity. If a high centrifugal force is substituted for gravity in any type of concentrator,. the velocity ai which settling, and therefore concentration, takes place is greatly in: creased. The incréased force not only speeds up the settling rate of all particles suspended in the concentrating medium, but for the fins sizes the increase is greater foi than for those oj low, specific gravity. This change ir the relative settling rates of smal: particles of different densities is an important aid to concentration, In crushing ores as a preliminary valuable minerals is inevitably re duced to very sniall particles, having such a low settling rate in watei that concentration in grayity machines, such as jigs, tables and vanners is difficult and often impractifully handled in a centrifugal con centrator.
