that Californias gross retail sales
gained approximately $273,319,000
during the last half of 1936. This
total gain represents an average increase of $45,553,000 a month in retail business subject to the tax during the entire last half period.
General business levels in California during 1936 were the highest since 1930 according to the
monthly report of Arlin E. Stockburger, director ‘of finance. Stockburger declared that available reports for the first two months of the

spite of unsettled conditions in some
of the major state and national industries.
Legislative members looked ahead
optimistically this week and _ predicted that the deluge of nearly
4,000 bills introduced during the first
session could be settled and the sessions closed by about May 15. The
1935 session ran until June 15. It isf
