So. $2 Commercial street, Nevada City, Cal SUNDAY, DEO. 2, 1888. — A Craven’s Death. At Placerville Friday John Henry Myer was hung in expiation of the brutal murderof John Lowell. Two! Deputy Sheriffs watched with Myer as he passed his last night on earth. The prisoner had been given an opiate, but he could not sleep and tossed from side to side on a rongh cot in his cell. “Oh, dear! oh, dear! oh, God have mercy!” he moaned. By sunrise he had entirely collapsed, and when shaved by one of the watchers, his head rélled from side to side, asif the ‘neck had already been broken. Before 8 o’clock the crowd began to gather about the jail. The sound of tramping feet seemed to arouse Myer and at, _ one time he raised his head\and listened. He seemed to realize the cause of the corifiotion and sank back with amoan. About9 o’clock Myer consented to drink a pint of milk, the only nourishment he had taken for many hours. Halfan hour before noon he was practically dead. He did not recognize anyone. He was lying flat on his back his eyes closed and his breast heaving. To all intents and purposes he was WOMEN IN LOVE. An Analysis Which May or May Not Be Just, but Is Worth Thinking about. In the love of a woman thereis always a certain element of childishness, which hasa reflex, if but temporary action upon her whole nature. ‘The phenomenon is due partly to the fact that she is under the dominant infiuence of a wholly natural instinct, partly tothe fact that the object of her love is of stronger make than herself, mentally, spiritually and physically. This sense of dependence andweakness, and, consequently, ‘of extreme” youth, THE ONLY CELERY Brilliant COMPOUND Paine 's Durable £24 CURES [PROOFS . “ Paine’s Celery ComEcono‘nical Nouraigta esiceinier” Are Diame.nd Dyes. ‘They excel ail [Nervous "San Jackie, Cah” ‘others in ‘Strength, Purity and Fastness. Then, under the infinence of peculiarly strong responsibilities, she gives her youth to them, and ‘with it the plasticity of her nature, 2 The moment a woman falls in love, that moment she becomes an object of paramount interest in her own eyes. All’her life she has regarded herself from the outside; her wants and needs have been purely objective; consequently . she has not, known herself, and her spiritual nature has claimed but little of herattention. But under the influence of love she plunges into herself, as it were, and‘her life for the time. being is purely subjective. She broadens, expands, developes, concentrates; and her successive evolutions are a perpetual source of delight and absorbing study. Moreover, her sense of individuality grows and flourishes, and becomes so powerful that she is unalterably certain —untilit ts over—that her experience is an isolated and wholly remarkable one. Naturally she must talk to someone; she is teeming with her discoveries, her excursions into the heretofore unexplained depths of human nature; the necessity fora confidant fs not ‘one to be withstood, and who so natural or understanding a confidant as her lover? Jf the loyer be a clever man and: an analyst, he jis profoundly interested at first, particularly if she bave some trick of mind which gives her, or seems to give ber, the smack, of individuality. If he beatrue lover, and a man with any depth of feeling and of rhind, he does not tire, of course; Sut otherwise hefrightened to death. A Deputy Sheriff eventually becomes either oppressed or came in with a clean white shirt for Myer. The latter was called, but made noreply. And it took three men to put tre garments upon him, he not being able to help himself in the least. When his hands would be released they would fall to his side as if he had lost all use of his muscles. About 12:30 o’clock Myer was arous~ ed somewhat and was able to sit erect on hiscouch. He continucd to moan however, and his wailings :could be heard even beyond the barred doors. At 12:50, Deputy Sheriff Winchell entered the cell to read the death warrant. He urged Myer to brace up and die like a man, but the prisoner made no reply. When the reading had been concluded, two Deputies tock him by each arm andled him from the cell. He had to be supported, but when he camein sight of the gallows he gave down and fell tothe ground. He was ordered to arise but could not do so. Four strong men seized him, two by arms and two by legs. He was thus carried up the stairway leading to the gallows. He was placed on the trap in standing position, but at once fell to @ sitting posture. He was then raised and held erect while his legs and arms then adjusted the rope and toid Myer that if he had anything to say, now was his time. Myer only continued to weep and exclaimed: ‘SOb my poor wife!’ Napier then nodded, Deputy Sheriff Winchell cut the rope, and Myer shot through the opening. His neck was broken, and in fourteen minutes Drs. Smith and Baum announced that his pulse had ceased to beat. Amomentafter, the body was cut down and placed in a rough coffin. Drager and Olsen, his confederates, were locked in their cells during the execution, but they could certainly hear when the drop fell. A Terrible Mining Accident. A fire was discovered Friday mornfrightened; beeither wishes that women would not take themselves so seriously and forget to be amusing, or her belief in her peculiar and absolute originality communicates itself to him, and he does not feel equal to handling and directing so remarkable a passion.—Frank Lin. THE PIOUS RUSSIAN. Devotions Seen by the Traveler in tho ~Land of the Czar. One of the first things that strikes the stranger in St. Petersburg, and still more in Moscow, isthe constant crossing that goes on in the streets. Whenever a devout Russian passes a church or a shrine ora boly altar be lifts his hat and crosses himself in the fashion of the Easterp Church. In Moscow the number of shrines is so great and the sanctity of some cf them so overpowering that it must be difficult for the devout orthodox to get along the street. In St Petersburg the number is much less, but it is still sufficient to keep your tavostchik’s arms in tolerably active exercise. s One thing puzzled me much, In St. Petersburg tbe women very seldom crossed themselves. For one woman who would make the sign of the cross in passing the shrine of the entrance ‘to the Gostinnoi Dvor it would be made by a dozen men. In Moscow the women were more careful to perform their devotions, but in St. Petersburg the males were much more deyout to outward seeming than the women. Of the women who did obeisance to, the holy places in St. Petersburg all were poor. I did not see one well-dressed lady cross herself in the streets alk the time I was in Russia. Officers and gentlemen were not so particular as the isvostchiks and workmen, but it was no uncommon sight to see them making the sign of the cross. Itraveled with Gen. Ignatieff from St. Petersburg to Moscow. The moment the train started the General crossed himself twice, remarking that although you should always pray, it was especially incumbent upon you to do so when starting on a journey. The number of shrines in Russia where candles are burning before holy pictures is very great, and much greater importance is attached to the science of genuflexion than is easily credible to the nonritualistic rover. S Sunday was much more generally observed as a holiday than I expected. The shops on the Grand Morskaya and ingin the Calumet and Helca mine} the Neviski Prospekt are almost all shut of Michigan. were working. The fire made rapic headway and all made a rush for the surface, but eight are missing. It is certain that they are dead. The mine is completely covered with,a dense smoke: It is believed the damage, financially, will not be great. The company was at last advices making desperate efforts to control the flames and rescue the miners, but it looks as if tLe case is hopeless. The men are all Cornisimen. The scene about the ‘mine was heart-rending. The families of the men were cognizant ‘of the extreme likelihood that the men would never come out alive, and to their grief and lamentations were added the most frantic confusion on the part of all except the trained employes of the company. AFRICAN RACE OF DWARFS. Strange Little People Seen by Emin Pasha in His Explorations. One of the most striking things to be met with in the earlier pages of Emin Pasha’s journal is a reference toa report which is brought to him between Lado and Dufile, on the Upper Nile, that arace of dwarfs inhabit mountain caves to the west of Beden. They are said to be only forty inches high, of a brown color, and of great agility, to eat white ants and roots, and to shoot with very small arrows, which are poisoned and very difficult to extract. The pigmies he wasiinclined to regard as the remainder of a dwarf population which ages-ago spread itself over Central Africa. Four years later he himself comes upon some specimens of the Akka, a pigmy people divided into numerous small tribes, who lead a nomadic life in the Monbuttu country. One of these Akka “had a reddish but rather dark skin (probably dirt),was very prognathous, rather swag-bellied, but exceedingly nimble. His height was 3 feet 6 inches. His whole body was covered by thick, stiff hair, almost like felt, which was especially thick on the breast.” A gift fourteen years of age measured 8 feet 7-8 inch in height. . ‘These people are said to. be very expert hunters, but also very vindictive, so that the neighboring tribes are glad to let them have al! they want for maintenance in return forskins and feathers, the produets uf the chase, which they prosecute with be 7s and arrows alone. 4 Ghost and Bullet.
