Robert D. Proctor, graduate of the
Nevada City High School, has been
elected to membership in Phi Beta
Keone, University of California chapter. This is a scholarship society em-.
blem of which. is a key, Robert is a
senior in the university and his majer is mining. :
Young Proctor is a son of Mr. and
Proctor is an engineer and mill superintendent at the Lava Cap. His son
won a Virginia Bradley scholarship
for his first two years in the university, and later was granted a larger
scholarship offered to students in
mining and engineering courses.
At the high school it was learned
that it has been several years since a
graduate has won a Phi Beta Kappa
key in any university.
CLOCK WORKS AGAIN

died in Sacramento Friday at the
home of a brother, Lester R. Kirkham. .
Rey. David H. Ralston of the Methodist Church officiated at the ser“ees. Interment was in the Pine
Grove Cemetery,
The deceased attended Nevada
City schools and followed nursing Bb
a profession until she married the
Yate Harry Collins.
She was the daughter of the late
W. W. and Hattie Kirkham of this
region,
Surviving relatives include her brother and a son, Bruce Collins of Sacramento.

OBJECTORS MAY BE FOUNDED
AT HOBART MILLS SITE ,
Two possibilities for the development of Hobart Mills, in the eastern
end of Nevada County; for the use of the army are now being considered
4 by government officials, according to word from Congressman Harry L.
The first possibility is for the establishment of an army camp at the
site of the former lumber town and the second is for housing conscientious
objectors who decline non-Combatant service with the army.

of the Red Cross tomorrow (Tuesday) at the National Hotel in the
room in back of the banqueting
room. This working place has been
granted to the Red Cross through the
courtesy of Mr: and Mrs. Dick Worth,

for gowns for layettes, wool yarn for
knitting and crocheting black shaw!s
‘ and cotton material for women’s and
girls’ dresses.
The time for sending the next
quota, it is announced, is April 30.
This gives ample time to all those,
who have been aiding in Red Cross
work, to undertake men’s, women’s
and children’s sweaters, promised
for that date, or to help with the
women’s.and girls’ dresses, now being cut and distributed.
The Red Cross chapter is hopeful
that representatives of the several
women’s organizations will take some
of: this work to complete in_ their
own circle.
Mrs. Ray Murchie, president, of
the Ladies Aid Society, has promised to suggest this plan at the next
meeting, and it is hoped other groups
will do likewise.
A large bundle of woolen yarn and
material for layettes was sent Saturday to Truckee, where Mrs. G. J.
Keetch, is giving generously of. her
time in carrying on the work,

Herbert Costa and Louis Ward,
two local men who have been in
Honolulu, Hawaii, about two months
like their new environment. Mrs.
Costa plans to join her husband later.
Clem Organ, who will graduate
from St. Mary’s College in June, was

RETURN FROM TRIP
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Heether of.
Camptonvile have returned to their
home after a several weeks visit
with relatives in Michigan. Mrs.
Heether’s father, who had been visiting in Camptonville, made the return trip with the Heethers,
Mr. and Mrs, Frank: Heether,
uncle and aunt of the Camtopnville
Heethers, accompanied the Heethers
uncle and aunt of the Camptonville
and will visit there for the next several months.
The father of Mrs. Heether will
return to Camptonville soon ‘with his
grandson and his family. Mr, and
Mrs. Merle Hedley and son.
The third district court of appeal
in Sacramento has upheld the refusal
of Margaret E, Lambert, treasurer
of Sierra County, to pay an increase
in salary to C. W. Robbins, justice
of the peace in Downieville Township.
The county board of supervisors
raised the pay from $15 to $65 a
month when it appointed Robbins to
finish the unexpired term of C. D.
Ross, who resigned in 1939.
The court upheld the treasurer’s
action on the constitutional provision that the compensation of any
county, township or municipal officer shall not be increased after his
election of during his term of office.
