SEE AR ATER ot OTC RTE Rite ES bers ela eee Le r * % Nevada a City Nugget — Thursday, March 19, 1942 i iia ing to keep out of war—we’'re in one tothe death. Knute Rock ne never mentioned defense when he made} his famous appeal to his 1930 team before it met U. S. C's. greatest machine. Rockre talked soberly of the power of the Trojans. who had smashed California 72 to 0 and humbled ‘Stanford by some 40 points. He spoke of the betting odds against Notre Dame. And then, at the last electric moment. Rockne suddenly shouted: “But you, too, are a great team!” His voice rose to a scream: “Get out there now and move down that wield! Move down that field! MOVE DOWN 'FHAT FIELD Rockne’s inspired kids-scored a smashing, amazing upset victory. Page. Two weer a er r da City N P A MISTAKE. IN LOCATION . evada y ugge ; : — . That’s the program to work for, think. about—and talk about! LIFE-LINE TO THE YUKON Beginning of construction on the planned United States Alaska highway is most welcome news for California and the entire West. Even a casual look at the map of the North Pacific area seiecle with almost startling clarity the strategic value of Alaska to Japan as well as to this country. Like stepping stones the Aleution Islands stretch half way across the Pacific toward Japan — stretch to within éasy bombing distance of Tokio itself—to within short shipping distance of Russia's Siberian peninsula of Kamchatka, from which Russian and American bombing forces could launch devastating air bombardment of all Japan whenever the inevitable Jap-Russian conflict opens. Conversely, as the map so plainly shows, Japanese seizure of Alaska would be disastrous to this country. Based on the Alaska panhandle, fleets of Japan’s best bombers, which have a range of 4000 miles could raid our western cities while her naval squardons ravaged the Pacific Coast. Alaska is strongly garrisoned and equipped today; bur to assure adequate supplies for any future eventrality America must build her own 1500-mile “Burma road” through the territory of friendly Canada—a lifeline not alone of defense but for the marshalling of the might that shall visit upon the Japanese home islands the doom of a thousand Pearl Harbors. ‘ SEE THE “GOOD BAD MAN” Annual Senior Farce Given by the Class of 1942, Nevada City High School Friday.
