Mrs. Willis Green has returned
home from a visit of a few days in:
Alleghany, Her sister; Mrs. A. L.!
Just one short year ago, kind sirs,And we were in a sorry mess,
That faith and hope were low in me,
I now shall openly confess.
I couldn’t find a job, you see,
The bank closed right before my face,
The big bad wolf was at the door— ,
In fact the whole pack ranged the place.:
The skies were dark and drear above,
Grim dangers lurked on every side,
The ship of state was off her course—
The victim of an adverse tide.
We were a rather helpless crew,
Nobody seemed to have a plan;
But like resourceful men of old,
We looked about and found a man.
. :
We put the problem up to him,
Upon the wheel we placed his hand,
‘Here is the ship, she needs repairs,’
We said, and gave him full command;
He did not quail before the task,
His voice was firm, his eyes were clear,
We promised him our loyalty,
And lost our sense of-abject fear.
And now the good ship moves again,
She's headed for the sunlit streams,
Where she was wont to sail of yore—
An Argosy of golden dreams;
But there are dangers still to pass,
Too near us yet the breakers roar;
Let no good seamen leave his post
Unttil the stormy voyage is o’er.
Yes, there are tides to conquer still,
But we have surely made a start;
“From Fear to Faith,” our slogan now,
Our solemn pledge, “We Do Our Part.”
_A. Merriam Conner.
“From Fear To Faith” ISLE OF CRETE.
SEAT OF EARLY
CIVILIZATION,
OAKLAND, Mar. 1. How present
civilization has obtained its heritage
from the Minoan culture of 1600 B.
C., as revealed by excavations carx. ried on by Sir Arthur Evans, the archeologist, on the Isle of Crete, was
described today before the faculty of
the University High School. by Pro. fessor Leon J. Richardson, director
of the Extension Division in the Un. iversity of California.
. It is now believed, he said,
bulls bred for sport by the Minoans
are the forebears of modern blooded
cattle. Sir Evans also found evidence, he pointed out, that the Minoans had developed wheat, probably
from Mediterranean spelt, and lived
in houses surrounded by gardens similar in many ways to those of the
present day.
Years of patient searching by Sir
Evans, in which crews of natives
were employed to remove the soil,
layer by layer, with spoons, from a
tract of semi-arid land_.on the Isle of
Crete above the village of Heraclea,
brought to light the ancient Palace
of Minos, legendary law-giver of
Crete. Partly destroyed by earthquake and fire, the place was still in
fair state of preservation when unearthed by Sir Evans, with band fresture still intact. Its discovery, placing the date of Minoan civilization
at 1600 B. C., says Professor Rich/ardson, descredited most of the
. present knowledge of ancient history.
. Today, says Professor Richardson,
. Sir Evans is more than eighty years
“. old. He lives’in Crete. In Hereclea,
the Turkish’ government has provid'ed a museum to house the treasures
‘discovered by Sir Evans. The laws of

TAKES ON NEW UFE
Fred J. Ben a owner of the pe ;
pot Hill mine above Camptonville, is
taking advantage of the abundant
' water supply from the recent ‘heavy
rains and has the big monitofs playing against the high gravel banks.
This rich gravel property has been
jin the Joubert family for over two’
generations. In the earlier years the
property was’ worked as gold was
needed by the family:
A shortage of water in recent
years has worked a handicap on thisproperty.
The big monitors in operation are
sight to visitors andtourists, as the terrific force of water tears down the high gravelbanks.

Farm prices of California commodities, stimulated by increased pur‘chasing power and the strengthen. ing confidence of-the buying public,
‘as well as the effects of the agriculltural relief program, reached new
high ground at the outset of 1934, a
survey of the Bank of America Business Review discloses.
. The general level of prices receivjing January, 1934, was 73 per cent
jot the July 1910-June 1915 average,
iH according to the Review. This is the
. nignest point attained since November 1932 and constitutes a gain of
almost 14 per cent over the preceding month. ;
The progress made by California
farm prices may be gauged by the
fact that the January index figure
{was 30.8 per cent, above the alljtime low of last April. On a yeartoyear basis the improvement was also
impressive, the January 1934 index
ifigure showing.a 7.7 per cent gain
