The agricultural section. of the State Chamber of Commerce met the other day to consider the farm labor situation involving*200,000° men, women and children who Always, with this\ migratory population, the problem has been housing. It is probable that much of the disorder, turmoil and violence in their\affairs has come about because; they have not had the health and respect that decent living conditions imbue. ° Without these things, they have often become willing followers of professional trouble makers. Last year the Federal Resettlement Administration set up model camps, one in the Sacramento and one in the San Joaquin Valley. Today these are looked upon as unqualified successes. This year, according to word just vetsived from Washington, the Federal agency has acquired funds and approva! for establishment of 20 more such camps at suitable centers in fruit and cotton areas. It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of . , this problem. After all, agriculture is dependent ‘upen these workers, and California’s crops last year were worth $330,000,000. This action by the Federal government is perhaps not the ultimate solution for California’s\ vast population of migratory workers. But it at least seems.a sane step toward finding the answer to a problem that has dogged the Golden State for years.
