Nov. 1856, Sheriff W. W. Wright and two deputies went to Gold Flat jail to spend the night watching some prisoners. Unbeknown to the officials several citizens were. watching the jail. A slight disturbance in the night and two officers were killed, one the _ sheriff. Bandits escaped and Ostrom rode in on the uninjured horse. Mr. Gaviote had a large sum of gold dust and nuggets from the big Derbee hydraulic mine. In ’86 Henry Meyers’ was killed driving a stage. to this city over North Bloomfield road by robbers; as the news spread the fire bell rang for a big fire. Ed Baker drove a wagon across Pine street bridge and it collapsed, all occurring in the space of an hour. One thousand dollars was raised for fire protection for the city in early times by the women of the town. Later in 1860 the firemen raised $1,000 and formed the Nevada Hose Co. Later another company formed being the Pennsylvania. Charles Marsh offered his water system to the city of Nevada on a 20 year contract.. It was accepted and proved: the’ best system up to that time. . In 1860 several sidewalks and city streets were planked. Plans were to plank a road to Marysville which fell through. Dr. Sawyer spoke briefly stating all characters in the “Diary of a ’49er’’ were true persons having names changed.
