A FAIR DEAL FOR THE GOLD MINERS If ever an industry suffered from the limitations imposed by the war, it was gold mining in California. The War Production Board's Limitation Order L-208 virtually wiped out gold mining for the duration. As a result, the gold miner was confronted by an impossible situation. If he could swing it financially, he kept his mine timbered and unwatered, though he had no revenue coming in. If not, he simply had to let the property deteriorate. This week the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce went on record as urging federal reimbursement for some of the losses suffered by the miners. That sort of regional cooperation makes good sense. For, as the chamber points out, gold mining has contributed substantially to the economic growth and welfare of San Francisco. And when gold production dropped from more than $50,000,000 in 1940 to less than $5,000,000 in 1944, San Francisco suffered along with the miners.—Contributed., ‘4 BACK IN “CIVVIES” Well,. we see that after four years of honorable service with the U. S. Army, San Francisco's Cow Palace has been reconverted to its old civilian job, that of serving the livestock industry. : Just three weeks before Pearl Harbor, the Cow Palace was the scene of the first Grand National Livestock Exposition. It was a whale of a show and put San Francisco on the map as far as livestock raisers were concerned. But the army San Francisco show was out “‘for the duration." This week, the No. . -A District Agricultural Association announced plans-for the second: Grand’ National Livestock Exposition, Horse Show and Rodeo, to be held at the Cow Palace November 16 to 24, inclusive. And officials of the asGrand National even bigger and better than the 1941] event. ‘There are a number of reasons why rural California should welcome the return of the Grand National to the Cow Palace. Not the least of these is that it will i impress upon San keystones of their prosperity. You seldom have to sell the livestock industry to a resident of rural California. But the people raising makes to their own economy and to take for granted the toil and sweat and worry that goes into the production of meats and milk and butter for their tables —Contributed.
