‘CHANGED TO COMBE DAM
According to an announcement
ager of Nevada Irrigation District,
to Auburn Parlor No. 59, Native
Sons of the Golden West, the name of
the beautiful lake on Bear River has
peen restored to the original name,
Combe Reservoir. oe
Combe Crossing at this point on
Bear River. has always. been a promint landmark in the history of Ne‘yada and Placer counties until covered with the waters of the new
construction
Dam -and later changer to Van Giesen. ‘
{he interest taken by the Native
gous-in the preservation of the historical landmarks of the state is well
known, and in this case the attention.
of the Nevada Irrigation District was
called to the matter by the Native
sons Parlor of Auburn, Grass Valley,
Nevada City and Lincoln with the request for the restoration of the name
Combe Dam. :
‘In order to bring about the change
it was mecessary for the district to
obtain the approval of the State Department of Public Works. This was
done and Mr, George W. Hawley,
Deputy in charge of Dams, has written Mr. Durbrow that the name of
the dam has been changed upon their
records and that it is now officially
named Combe and will continue to
be known as the Combe Dam.
This name is especially fitting in
honor of Auguste Combe, a pioneer
who came here from France in the
early days of the gold rush. After
mining in this are along Bear River
he settled there at what has been
known to this time as the Combe
crossing until covered by the waters
of Combe Reservoir.
Auguste Combe, aside from being
ofa generous and hospitable nature
was considered a student and leader
in agricultural methods of his day,
and was one of the first to introduce
alfalfa into California and likewise
was one of the first to construct a
ditch by which he brought water
from bear River to irrigate his much
admired stand of alfalfa, then called
“Chili Clover.’”’ He was in a real
sense a pioneer of irrigation, now
exemplified by the fine system of the
Nevada Irrigation District, which has
the greater portion of their Combe
Reservoir over land originally taken
up’ by Auguste Combe.
Combe, also was well known in
his-day--as-a-fancier and breeder of
fine ARrabian horses. One of his
horses, a pacer, it is said was sent
to Australia and there became
famous.
Combe had no relatives here, and
died in March, 1894, and is buried
in Grass Valley.
In announcing the change Mr. Durbrow stated for the Nevada Irrigation District their pleasure in being
‘able to assist the worthy idea for
the preservation of the names of our
pioneers on historical landmarks.
