SPIRITUALS OF
The hymns sung by Oliver Cromwell’s Ironsides on their way to battle, by John Calvin’s Dissenters in
their Highland hiding places and by
the Hugehnot followers of de la Motte in the French prisons are still
sung by their descendants in Alabama and neighboring states.
They were carried to Virginia in
the prison ships by. Scotch and English. refugees after the restoration
of Charles II; while the Hugenots,
in flight from France, carried them
to North Carolina.
As these pioneers forged their way
into the mountainous regions of the
new world, their songs sustained
them among natural hardships.
. Centuries passed and in the isolated mountain regions, especially those
of Alabama, the songs lived on with
out competition, handed down. like
hierlooms from father to son. Today
the hymns are the same as they were
Supervised musical training among
the mountaineers, did not begin until about 1860, when M. L. Swan, an
itinerant music master, settled in
Jackson County, Tennessee. He is
said to have used a _ seven. sharp
“Harp of Columbia’’ in setting the
pitch for his choristers. From this
‘novel instrument, the singers‘in Jasper derived :their designation as
“Greek Harp Singers.” This organization gave its first public concert
in 1873. In 1909, a state wide organization of ‘‘white spiritual’’ singers was formed under the name of
the Alabama State Sacred Harp Musical Association. It has now 110

“sing” at Birmingham.
The Association not only keeps
alive the ancient hymns, but also the
traditions of the music classes of
other days. Seated about a large
table, the singers are directed by a
concert master. who uses a pitch pipe
to strike the lead notes. They ‘first
intone their ‘‘so-lo-fa’s’ and then
join in singing the words. The writer who looked up the activities of
the Association in-preparing articles
on Alabama for the American Guide
—the government’s forthcoming 5volume travel handbook — learned
that only the old hymns handed
down by the followers of Cromwell,
Calvin and de la Motte are used in
concert programs. The reason that
these are called ‘‘White Spirituals”’
is to distinguish them from the far
more widely known colored spirituals.
Some of the ‘‘White Spirituals’’ are
widely known by old American families, though not under that classification. In many a home. of the
land, Grandma’s musical repertoire
includes the antique favorite, ‘“‘Paradise,’’ which begins:
“There is a land of pure delight,
Where saints immortal reign;
Infinite day excludes the night,
And pleasures banish pain, and
pleasures banish pain.’’

FOR CHRONIC SPEEDERS
SAN FRANCISCO, March §27.—
Persons who are obviously unfit. to
drive an automobile or who repeatedly and chronically defy or ignore
public safety mechanisms and regulations, should be subjected to a
mental and physical examination.
This is the openion of Dr. E. W.
Twitchell, clinical professor of neuropsychiatry of the University of
California Medical School. According to Dr. Twitchell it would not be
practicable, to subject every driver or
prospective driver to such an examination, but it certainly should be
done in the case of those who persistently defy necssary driving restrictions and menace the lives and
limbs of others.
According to Dr. Twitchell
automobile mortality and accident
situation may be expected to become
much worse before the people of the.
relief. The number of incompetents
now driving cars is constantly on the
increase, and it is presumed that this
number must increase to the saturation point of human tolerance and
endurance before there is a change.
Dr. Twitchell states he has occasionally found it necessary to submit
reports to the State Division of Motor Vehicles regarding patients who
wre obviously unfit to drive. In one
instance, he said he obtained eancellation of the license of one insane
man who was being permitted to operate his car freely on crowded
streets and highways. Another taxicab driver in one of the San Mateo
peninsula towns who was suffering
from a severe nervous complaint also came to his attention, and he has
warned a number of. epileptics and
members of their families that these
sick persons should not drive an automobile.

SCIENTISTS GATHER
MANY RARE FLOWERS
BERKELEY, Mar. 27.—The state
of California; long famous for its
wild flowers, is gradually, through
the assistance of science, becoming
one of the world’s garden spots, for:
nature’s most beautiful ornamental
plants.
;
Combining business with pleasure,
botanists at the University of” California in the course of their scientific studies of plant life are gathering previously unobtainable flowers
and shrubs from the far corners of
/ the earth to aid in beautifying the
state.
These facts are pointed out by the
University Explorer in announcing
the subject for his ~adventure in
science, to be presented over the Columbia Don Lee System tomorrow
(Sunday) night at 9:30 o’clock. The
title of this adventure will be ‘‘Hunting Plants by Airplane.’’
The theme of the story will be an»
expedition to South American recently completed under the direction
of Professor T. H. Goodspeed, director, of the University Botanical
Gardens.
Harley Leete, Jr., came up from
Berkeley today to visit his parents.
