The United States should not be drawn into another war unless its own possessions are threatened. Congress which sees war coming, as does every other intelligent group in the United States, has before itmany measures to preserve this country from being thrust into other nation’s wars. One of these measures would conscript wealth, just as man power is conscripted. This measure is proposed by the American Legion and should be enacted. Another would ‘place an embargo on Americans leaving this country for the danger zones in foreign wars. These are two measures which would help to keep us out of other peoples’ wars. Better yet would be an embargo on money, munitions or goods of any kind to any nation while engaged in war. An enactment of this kind would probably do more to preserve world peace than any other single measure. Enacted now while the world is at peace, it would serve notice upon all the European war debt welchers, that Uncle Sam had.learned his lesson, and that from now on they can count him out as an ally in cny of their bloody adventures, whether as banker, munitioner or goods commissioner. Such a measure passed now would give us clean hands in whatever storm arose. There are difficulties, of course, grave but not insurmountable. The question of serving neutrals in event of foreign war, is perhaps, the gravest. Serving Germany, the Scandinavian neutrals grew extremely rich during the World war, and much of Scandinavian buying for German importation was done in the United States. However, if the United States were to limit its service to neutrals who loaded their cargo boats at American ports, instead of attempting to’‘make deliveries in ships flying the United States flag, it seems probable that it could avoid trouble with belligerents. The people of this country looking at Europe can readily see what befalls European belligerents. Germany, Italy and Austria are Fascist countries. The people are enslaved. Liberty as we know it is dead. Russia has gone Communist. The Russian people is enslaved. There is little to choose between the two slaveries. Both suffer dictatorship. In the United States, England and France, the democracies survive. But will they survive another war? ABOUT HOT AIR (Contributed) : Is it true, the charge of other sections of the country, that we of California are about fifty per cent hot air? The very thought is enough to set many of us to shouting facts and figures which prove California’s leadership among the states in a great many important matters. But when the shouting dies, the man who likes to face all the facts, even unpleasant ones, may step forward to point out that the picture is not complete, therefore false. _Hisaddition to it will concern California’s leadership. in yet another matter—in the number of Posaps killed last year as a result of automobile accidents. Only one state exceeded our toll of 2805 lives during 1934, and that was New York, with 2932. But the population of New York is more than twice California’s, which means that drivers on our highways were twice as deadly. If further proof of the unwanted leadership is there is California's automobile death rate index, stands at 45:8, compared to . 4.3 for the nation. Now, having faced the facts, awbat do we see in an analy sis . te teste st eeleleiniicioi} Seale ele ele rtesferf ES, which i " ¢ PRM adisiat~ tie cee 739 a Ch meee ie year, 16, 221 peele ed the i of two machines; 9,275 the striking of pedes. 440 . mer trians; were collisions with trains, accidents. They were spun glass and made in~-London. In his mining on the South Yuba he has found and saved about two pounds of old musket shot, buck shot and bird shot. The old musket balls are about one half inch through and were evidently fired by the early hunters. A great deal of babbit and lead is picked up in mine operations also. All these leaden missles are washed into the streams and are ‘recovered with the gold.
