The four largest of these companies, Pacific Mutual, California Western States, Occidental and West Coast, it is said, show an increase in new insurance written on a paid for basis. of $8,123,250 in 1932 over 1931, bringing the total of the four companies to $146,400,616. General business activities declined slightly, the Bank of America Far Business Index recording 57.7. Building activity as reported by the 61 largest cities in eight Wes-tern states, totaled $20,597,245 for January and February, forming a 46 per cent increase: this year .as compared. with the corresponding months of 1932: The dollar value of retail trade in 78 department and similar stores in the 12 federal reserve district was 24.8 per cent lower in February 1933, than in-February 1932. Decreased commodity prices levels and one day shorter month account for part of this decline. The Bank Review gives a complete survey of the employment situation. In 1183 reporting plants employing 60 per cent of the industrial wage earners of California, employment increased .8 per cent from January to February. Payrolls increased 2.5 per cent and the average weekly earnings increased 1.7 per cent. In San~Francisco the number of employes showed an increase of 5.4 per cent and pay roo!s increased 4.2 per cent. In Los Angeles county pay rolls and average weekly earnings increased 2.2 per cent.
