POPULATION TOMORROW: OTHER
STATISTICS WILL BE GATHERED
Tomorrow marks*the beginning of the seventeenth

In one way it’s not the beginning of the census, for

The Auburn district office, under supervision of Harold Berliner, Jr., Nevada City, is in
charge of the field work in 11
counties: Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Mariposa, Nevada, Mono, Placer, Sierra, Inyo
and Tuolumne.
A larger population is expected, along with the statewide rise,
which might make California No.

known for several months just

TREE PLANTING STARTS
AT MCCRACKEN RANCH
Planting of 500 ponderosa pine
seedlings, part-of abroad _program of reforestation throughout
California, was started this week
onthe J. P. McCracken ranch
mear North San Juan. .
The two-year-old seedlings are
supplied to the McCracken ranch
by the farm forest program of
the state division. of forestry.
Announcement of the planting
was made by Don Knowlton, local ranger of the state forestry
Givision, who said his aides will
help in the planting program as
part of a long range plan of reforestation of mountain range
lands.
Knowlton said many mountain
landowners are not taking part
in the program because financial
returns from such a venture extend over too long a period. He
said, however, the program rapidly is becoming more popular
and other, Nevada county landOwners will join the move next
year. Also taking part in the program is the University of California extension service.
Knowlton pointed out the Pacific coast mountain areas in future yearswill become’a major
