SAN ‘FRANCISCO, March 3,—In
the light of recent developments, it
ig expected in local mining. circles
that unusual mining activity will
break out in the Alleghany district
@inis spring and for this reason he
eyes of mining men here are focused
om this section of the California
Mother Lode.
The entry of the Black Bear Consolidated Mining Company and the
Park City Consolidated Miinng
Company into the district has created quite a stir while reports that
“megotiations for Alleghany proper' ties have been started or completed
by such large concerns as the Ahumada and Howe Sound Mining companies have intensified local intereat.
Official announcement has been
made that the Black Bear Consolidated Mining Company has taken
ever the Gold Streak olaim which
adjoins the property of the Park
@Gity Consolidated, which, in turn,
sidelines the Sixteen-to-One holdings. The Gold Streak is approximately 1000 feet from the workings.

The Black Bear Company plans to

downward extension of a highgrade

the surface. This work is expected
to provide 120 feet of backs.
Mining men here declare that the
Ajleghany district has always been
a rich field for gold mining enterprise but that it has.taken the existing shortage of the yellow metal
to bring about the activity that is
warranted by the profitable operatlons of companies that have developed the region’s network of goijdbearing veins in a systematic man

At the local headquarters of the
Black Bear Company it was learnea
that all arrangements have been
completed for the resumption of development of the Gold Streak, under the new management, and that
work will start as soon as weather

that several other mining companies
backed principally by San Francisco
capital will resume operations at
their properties in the Alleghany

during the winter months a comparison between the

very beneficial effect upon the little community.
_ In the last week it has been noticeable in the mining
talk. Street rumors of large mining deals have been
“prevalent, and within 30 days, it is freely predicted,
several large mining deals are to be consumated. Every few days some smaller deal goes through, but the
larger properties are mostly being handled by eastern
capital and these deals take longer to complete.

The well known Bigelow Mine at
Sierra City, the management

under
development of the property and
the preparation of the miil for early
‘production.
Smith & Dutton plan to install in
the mili certain additional equipment to make recovery on the
ground of all values contained in ihe
large tonnage of sulphide ores. In
recent tests ores found in a heretofore undeveloped ore-shoot showed
values ranging from $76 to $125.
The Bigelow Mine. adjoins tne
Sierra Buttes Mine which is the
largest mine in this section and one
of the earliest discoveries of quartz
in Sierra county. The Buttes is
credited with a production of over
$40,000,000.
The Ariel Vein extending from
the Buttes through the Bigelow
claim is over 30 feet in width -at
places. One ten-foot open cut known
as the Morrison discovery produced
over $40,000 by a short-distance deyelgpment, a number of years agu.
The Monumental Nugget, the second largest quartz nugget ever
four largest in the World, was found
at the northwes@gorner of the Bigeiow \claim. This weighed 106
“‘pounds\ and sold for over $21,000.
The nugget was part of a shoot of
solid gold that yielded $66,000 in
total. Another pocket was found
that produced $13,000.

all equipment \in the shop is operated by water-powered units.
FAMOUS DIADEM
AT FORREST IS
TO BE REOPENED
Once more the pages of Calitornia’s history, written in gold were
thumbed in retrospection when
Kirk Whitmore foreman for the
Shamrock Gold Mining Company,
passed through Nevada City, on his
way to Forrest, to reopen the DiaJem Mine. This property has been
closed down for twenty years due to
litigation and probate. Unanimous
agreement amongst warring owners
makes possible the resumption of
operations.
With every: commodity produced
in the entire Nation a drug on the
market at thie time, this State of
Gold reverts. to-its infaney: and the
stampedes unequalled in hiktory,.ase
which formed the background for
the fortunes responsible for the development of today:
The years, 1852 to 1932, one
short span of life, has seen the production of untold wealth from the
mines of California. This was made
possible by the unflinching valor and
determipation of the pyospectors
from the old school. The passing of
this element which had a temperment distinctive to a marked degree
is emphasized in the history of the
Diadem Mine.
The closing down of this property
in a manner which amounted to
abandonment on the ’ part of the
ownership was the result of this
old temperment. Many sacks of
high giade ore were thrown into the
shaft and the workings were abandoned to the elements at a period
'. in operations when the Diadem could
have been a producing property ot
the first magnitude.
The clearing of this shaft and the
recovery of the high grade ore
abandoned in wrath and defiance
will be watched closely by the mining world of the Pafific Slope. If
the last ton of gold has been extracted from the soil and rock of
this State then this work will have
been in vain. On the other hand, if
this area is still a vast storehouse
of the yellow metal then the operations of the Old Diadem may form
another page in the mining history
of California.
Located as it is, on the conteet
vein and just north of that famous
producer, 16 to 1, old time operators of this district are in accora
that the mine will be numbered with
the famous producers of this State.
