large crowd gathered Tuesday
corner by the Methodist
church waiting for the; SERA relief
truck of groceries which visits this
city twice a month and distributes
food to the needy. Twenty or twenty
five automobiles of men, women and
children, many of them wearing the
yellow CIO buttons, waited patiently
until the truck came in. Then the
driver doled out to each of those entitled to relief a dozen oranges and
a half dozen apples. The recipients
complained bitterly that while this
dole was filling it was not very sustaining.
. It is understood that the recent
enrollment of some 38 WPA workers
of this vicinity in a CIO affiliate,
called the Workers Allianee, has
ibeen undertaken on the promise that

Tiere has’ been much complaint rerecently that Nevada County is not
getting its share of this free Federal
clothing at the Auburn depot,, and
the CIO now promises to remedy this
condition.

Nevada City high school has an excellent curriculum in home economies, which has been established under ‘the terms of a ‘Federal act of
July 1937, in which the Federal government provides half of the running
expenses of vocational departments
of secondary schools.
Some excellent new equipment has
been installed for these courses at
the high school this year. There are
.}oak work tables, topped with heavy
white linoleum and contained com‘. Partments for kitchen utensils, and
room for eight students to work in.
Miss Thelma McKnight, director
of the high school home economics
department, was trained at San Jose
State Teacher’s College, and before
coming to Nevada City, taught at
Ceres in this state.
Elzear Foley, engineer with fhe
state division of highways, came up
from Stockton during the past week
end and is spending his vacation
with his mother, Mrs. Emma Foley.
