Saturday, the California Scholarship Federation convention was held
at the: high school with an attendance of 100 representatives. under
the direction of Miss Margaret Rector, advisor of the Nevada City chapter. The registration began at 10:30
a. m. in the gymnasium,
The morning program was opened
with a welcome by Miss Margaret
of the Nevada City Chapter, who
spoke--on —-vocations-for -women;
Wayne Feathers, who spoke on vocations, Jack Neal who spoke on
photography as a vocation; and Dick
Evans, who spoke on aviation as a
vocation:
The morning program was concluded with several selections by the
chorus under the direction ‘of Mrs.
Marion: Libbey, and two’ solos’ by
Patricia Presley.,
In the afternoon the program continued with the string trio from
Grass Valley high school. Then the
roll was called and it was found that
100 representatives were present.
The next speakers were: Miss
Pearl Sifford, vice president of the
federation; Mary Innis, a student of
the Neveda City high school who
spoke on-journalism as a vocation;
John Larue, deputy district attorney
of Nevada County, who spoke on
“Law and Medicine’ and Mr. Stoke,
head vocational instructor at the
University of California.
The program ended with a piano
solo by Mary Libbey.
Last Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday were busy days for the members of the senior class, for try-outs
for the farce were being
made.
The cast will be selected by Miss
Ruiter and Mrs. Flewellen.
The-play;-“Meet-theDuchess,”” is
expected to be a hit.

GIRLS LEAGUE
The Girls’ League met one day
last week to nominate candidates for
the Older Girls Conference, which is
to be held at Richardson Springs.
This conference will be attended by
girls from all parts of Northern California,
A list of ten juniors and seniors
was submitted to the faculty, and
those chosen were Betty Krough,
Mary Libbey, Elsie Shreiber, Mary
Innis, Margaret Odegaard, Marilyn
Chapman and Adrianne Barnhart.
These students were chosen for
their outstanding ability in schlorship and leadership.
MELODRAMA PRESENTED
On Friday, the student body was
entertained in assembly by a humorous version of the melodrama The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Because the film, which was silent consisted of five reels not all_of
them were shown.
BAND PROGRAM
A fine program was given by the
band, under the direction of Ralph

PROPERTY LIENS
Today at noon, the lien of taxes
for the year 1939-40 started to apply to all property owned in Nevada
county. County Assessor John M.
Hammill will begin the actual work
by assessing property at the city hall
in Grass Valley tomorrow at 8 a. m.
He will maintain office hours each
day up to and including Saturday,
March 16 at 5 p. m.
Persons owning unsecured personcity hall and make payment of their
taxes. Those who claim veterans exemptions, $1,000 on property owned
by them, provided the veteran owns
less than $5,000 in property, should
present their claims. If they have
heretofore availed themselves of this
exemption,.it will not be necessary to
present their discharge papers show:
ing honorable discharge from military or naval service in time of
war, as Mr Hammill has those records.in his files.
Those who have not claimed this
exemption, however, must bring the

fame. When the Charleston gave him
the reputation as ‘‘the kid with the

Services for the late Mrs, Angie
L. Davis were held Saturday at the
Holmes Funeral Home. Rev. David
Ralston of the Methodist church officiated and interment was made in

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ninnis returned Sunday from a month’s vaeation spent in Oakland with relatives. Mr. Ninnis, who has been ill

trip to Truckee Saturday to inspect
the new Veterans Memorial building.
