Hawk Plummeting After
Prey Dives Into Window
of Ernest Carnes’ Home

shot or large rock penetrating his
home Monday when there was a
loud crash and sound of breaking
glass. Max Solaro was summoned
hurriedly and Carnes started to
investigate. He climbed up a ladder to the attic and noticed a
double glass 18 by 20 inch pane
more than half broken out. Glanc-_
ing about he saw a small sparrow
hawk perched on a beam in a dazed condition.
Seeing Mr. Carnes the hawk
flew past his head ike a bullet,
through the broken window and
over toward ‘trees across. the
stream near the Rector home. The
hawk had plummeted down killing a small bird in a tree near
the home and after striking it
could not recover itself and went
through the’ window.

‘JACKETS LOSE .
The Nevada City Yellowjackets
played at the San Juan higg school
at Fair Oaks Tuesday night, losing
three games. The A team lost by a
score of 53 to. 21. the B team, 21 to
16, and the-C team, 56'to 4.
The B contest was very close, but
San Juan easily took the other two
games. Childers was again high
point man for the A’s with 4 points.
Spracklin, 3; Thomas, Joyal, Jacobs, 2. Mitchell also saw _ action.
Smith high pointed for the B’s with
4 points, Ronningen took honors for
the C with two.
This game closed the basketball
season for the current year. The A
team won several practice games,
but lost all their league games, although they displayed) some good
playing.

CITY COUNCILMAN
Frank Davies, one of three in-.
cumbent city councilmen whose terms
expire this year, yesterday filed nomination papers as a candidate for re.
election at the biennial election on
Tuesday ,April 9.
Davies has been a council member for four years, sérving on the
street committee.~Upon the record
he has established in this incumbency
he is asking the support of the electorate in his candidacy for. re-election. :
He is the thifd candidate to toss
his hat in the ring to date. James
Penrose, incumbent, and R.'‘L. Bigelow, former supervisor of Tahoe national forest and former Nevada City
water collector, are also candidates.
C.W. Leiter, third incumbent whose
term is about to expire, has not, yet
indicated his intentions.

CALLED YESTERDAY
Sorrow was expressed throughout
‘Nevada City and county yesterday
when. it was learned,that Daniel J.
Coughlan had passed’ away at 9:30
o’clock. He has led an_ honorable,
kindly life and his sterling character won for him friends wherever he
was known. Mr. Coughlan was 71
years of age at time of passing. He
was born ‘at North Columbia and
spent the early years of his life in
. that little city. He came to Nevada
, City and was employed at the old
Champion mine a number of years,
i later operating the sawmill for the
. North Star mine in Grass Valley, retiring five years ago.
Left to mourn his passing are his
devoted wife, Katherine Coughlan,
son, Carroll Coughlan, brother, William Coughlan, and a number of
cousins most of whom reside at North
Columbia,
He was a member of’the Knights
of Columbus, Eagles and Mine Workers: Protective League.
The remains were moved to the
Coughlan home yesterday afternoon
by Holmes Funeral Home which has
charge “of funeral arrangements.
Funeral services will be held at
11 o’clock Saturday morning in St.
Canice Catholic church with Rev. Fr.
P. O'Reilly saying mass for the repose of his soul. Interment will be
made in the Catholic cemetery on
Lost, Hill.

for Rainbow Girls
The Order of Ralabow for Girls is
to benefit from a card party scheduled for the evening of March 12 ‘in
the Masonic Temple. ‘The order is
sponsored in Nevada City by Evangeline Chapter,.Q. E. S. and members of the Chapter have planned the
benefit to assist the girls in meeting
certain organizational expenses. Mrs.
Leland Smith is chairman of the
committee in charge, and announces
that some attractive prizes ~ have
been donated.
The Order of Rainbow for Girls
was instituted in Nevada City in
1939, with Esther Joyal, then Worthy Matron of Evangeline Chapter, as
Mother Advisor. Ruth Tamblyn, present Worthy Matron, states that in
her opinion the project has been
well worth while and has made a
valuable contribution to the girlhood
of Nevada City, by satisfying the

desire in every girl’s life for the beau.
