THE HOUSING SHORTAGE
People who would like to live in Nevada City, people
who have business here and must have a place to live, are
being driven from the city because there are no houses to be
rented. They are going out into the woods and tourists camps
where they rent the best they can get in the way of one or
two roomed cabins at prices that are too high. Some of them
go to Grass Valley where they can rent apartments and occasionally find a vacant house.
There seems to be but one or two persons in Nevada
City who realize the opportunity this house shortage affords
them. One o fthem has built a fifteen or twenty, one and two
room cabins for which he receives $10 to $15 per month on
an investment of not more than $200 per cabin. Another has
purchased a number of old houses, thoroughly renovated, repaired and painted them, and now receives excellent rents
for them.
Both these men declare they know of no other investment
which pays so large a percentage of profit as this.
A man who has lived in: Nevada City many years, estimates that at least 250 more people would be living in Nevada City today, if they could find house in which to live.
Estimate that each person spends $1.50 for groceries,
a day that should be flowing into the tills of our local merchants. As a matter of fact, of course they must receive a part
of it, but if these people were living here in their own homes,
the daily revenue for our local merchants would be greatly . .
increased.
Superficially it might appear that the people with money .
to invest here, have not sufficient faith in their own city to
invest it in houses and lots. We do not believe this is the .
case. We think it is rather due to fact that it is difficult to
see the forest because of the trees. We have lived so close to
conditions as they have been for many years, that we do not
see them changing before our very eyes. Hope long deferred
hath made the investor’s heart so sick that he does not see
that here and now there is an opportunity to invest money
and receive for it an unusually large return.
There never was in the past ten years such a demand for
homes as Nevada City now witnesses. There never was a time
in that period when building costs were cheaper and rents
higher. Here is an opportunity for an investor with little or
much money to greatly increase it.

Anarchists and radicals must be curbed:
While the attempted assisination of President-Elect Roosevelt doubtedless reflects the spirit of revolt now rampant
throughout the world, many California editors believe responsibility for attacks of this type may be traced to the tolerant
attitude assumed by American authorities toward. malcontents
who advocate violence and direct action rather than the orderly process of the ballot. )
Declaring a determined effort is being made by red
groups to create discontent that will result in revolution, the
Salinas IndexJournal said:
“The American people are put to test by the scandalous
practice in every community in the states of permitting extreme un-American groups to do.as they will,’ said the Pasadena Star-News.

COMMENT .
By Christian Andersen
A recent despatch stated that a
California oil company had sold a
large eargo of gasoline to the Soviet
Republic. That’s interesting to California, because it puts some more
from that there is another interesting phase, which is that the gasoline Was sold’ for four cents per gallon.
‘A little mental arithmetic discloses the phenominal fact that there is
a tremendous difference in the price
the motorist pays and the price paid
by a foreign country. Of course there
must be reason.
March 7, thousands of trees will be
planted in California as a living memorial to Calvin Coolidge. The sentimental side of such a move is more
worth while than a whole parkful of
dead ~— granite monuments. Aside
from this feature, living trees have
commercial value as well as adding
to the beauty of this already beautiful state.
George Bernard Shaw, the British
satirical humorist, will be in San
Francisco on March 27. He will no
doubt do some plain and fancy wisecracking, and. some will take him
seriously while others will continue
their faith in the world and in humanity.

Arthur Brisbane, the dean of American columnists has consistently
tried to describe California and its
advantages over the rest of the world
but even as versatile a writer as he,
finds himself swamped with ideas

Ere you read this column our new
president will have taken his place
as the nations leader. If confidence
can be restored with speech then our
new president certainly spoke the
magic words in his inaugural oration Saturday. I have listened to
many powerful orators, including W.

completely sold my consciousness as
the talk by Franklin D. Roosevelt
and most important of all he spoke
with a sincere frankness which left
nothing for the hearer to guess what
