Born in.1945 in the Toyshan disj

California, at 24, at the time when:

way. .
A few years in San Francisco, then '
he went on to Sacramento, where
work was plentiful in Chinese farms
and orchards. Followed some dabvling at gold mining in ‘Folsom. He
didn’t have the magic touch, but he
acquired something better. He found
a wife.
Yuba City was next on his itinerary. He toiled hard. But before long
he came to the conclusion that affluence was to be gained only by becoming a merchant. California was
growing and every boat from China
that docked at ’Frisco brought more
Cantonese here. Mark moved on to,
Auburn, then Truckee accumulating
his savings and dabbling in small
trades. .
Two decades passed. Then one
day, with his wife and son, Mark
trudged down miles of dusty trails
{somewhere in Nevada County and
came upon the town of Washington
It was the 1880’s and gold mining,
was still going on in that spot, hem-.

with pines. A Chinatown nestled
there and its three thousand celestials were mining the various bars and

Fortune Smiled at Last
At last fortune smiled on Mark
Yick Foo. A little provision store he
set up waxed prosperous. A mining
“claim he bought at a bargain yielded
' profits. The gold dust and nuggets

By that time the tail end of California’s gold era had passed and the
Chinatowns all along the Mother
Lode were giving up their ghosts. In
the 1920s Mark established his family in San ‘Francisco, but he himself
stayed in Nevada City, Even when
his store closed a decade ago he remained within its familiar interior,
stocked with herbs and wines, rice
papers, ink-stones and tobacco pipes. He was part of the quiet, rugged
splendor of the Sierra foothills and
the city held no glamour for him.
But at last, two years ago, he was
