A few years in San Francisco, then ' he went on to Sacramento, where work was plentiful in Chinese farms and orchards. Followed some dabvling at gold mining in ‘Folsom. He didn’t have the magic touch, but he acquired something better. He found a wife. Yuba City was next on his itinerary. He toiled hard. But before long he came to the conclusion that affluence was to be gained only by becoming a merchant. California was growing and every boat from China that docked at ’Frisco brought more Cantonese here. Mark moved on to, Auburn, then Truckee accumulating his savings and dabbling in small trades. . Two decades passed. Then one day, with his wife and son, Mark trudged down miles of dusty trails {somewhere in Nevada County and came upon the town of Washington It was the 1880’s and gold mining, was still going on in that spot, hem-. med in by mountains and covered with pines.
