PIANO GUITAR TRUMPET TROMBONE CLASSES OR PRIVATE LESSONS 1 . {li SERMONETTE BY REV. ANGUS MILLER THE MYSTERY OF THE DRAW NET Among the many vivid stories told by Christ, is the parable’of the draw net, whih is one of the simplest, and yet it is one that is not easy to interpret. . It forms one of a number told by our Lord to the simple folks of Galilee when He Was attempting to show them the meaning of what He called The Kingdom of Heaven. Our Lord was thronged by the press of the people coming to hear Him. He adopted a simple device to address them without being overwhelmed by their enthusiasm. Standing by the lakeside of the Sea of Galilee, He observed one of the numerous fishing ‘boats, He entered this, and géntly pushed it away from the shore. It was the most natural thing possible in illustrating the meaning . ! of His message from the simple things of the world around, that He should find an illustration in fishing. Here, then is the story. The Kingdom of Heaven is like one of the ordinary raw nets whih were the most common means of fishing in the lake at that time, The net is large, is dropped down from the side of the boat; and when filled with fish, it is drawn in and rapidly hauled to the shore. Once on shore, the ret is lift-ed high and dry and the fishermen then proeed to .examine their catch. The fish which are large and edible are placed in vessels eady to be consumed at once or salted for future consumption. Many of the fish, however are too small, or of the wrong kind, or not suited to the purposes required, and these are thrown away. Quite a simple illustration; in fact, hardly a story at all. What did Jesus . mean by it? 2 it is necessary to take this iflustration tegether with the other parable in inthe same series, all designed in some Way or other to make a little nearer the nature of the Kingdom or the chureh*that Christ was ahout to establish. The parable draws attention to one those problems which have perexed people from Christ’sS time ynWe go to church, we see the people who are gathered there. They . a “e not all what we should expect. . Ideally they ought to be of one type, Somehow, we do not find Perhaps even complain that the members of the church are Worse than those outside. There are strange inconsistemicies, many faults, many who are the very reverse of those one would call Christian. This has been the cause of perplexity and trial to many. Why are there black sheep in the flock? Why are there tares among of pl til now. there. Remember the judgment has not yet been pronounced, the balance is not yet struck. The good shail be separated from the bad, the inner secrets of the heart revealed. The parable, as all the parables——
is but an illustration, not a complete picture. We are not helpless fish, but responsible people, with the power of choice. Choose avight. In the previous parable . of the Tares our Lord teed insists . . that this perplexing mstery owes its . origin to the direct intervention of . Evil One, who by night has sewn . es amon the wheat. There is the . same truth in draw net but put in simpler form. The net is put down into the sea, and it is not the fault ef either the fisherman or the net that such diversity of fish are drawn into it, and brought to the surface.
