DEPREDATIONS
OF WILD FOWL
CAUSE ALARM
SAIN FRANCISCO, March 9.—On
the ground that crop depredations
by wild fowl will be aggravated,
strong protests are to be filed with
the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
against proposed additions to the
wild fowl refuge in Glenn and Colusa Counties, it was announced today
by George Lodi of Arbuckle, chairman of the Joint Wildlife Management Committee of California. Condemnation proceedings have . been
started by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service for acquisition of 9200
acres in Glenn and Colusa counties
adjoining the present 11000 acre
duck and geese refuge: This proposal, if carried out, would énlarge the
present refuge, known as the Spaulding Ranch, to more than 20,000
acres.
As a result of a meeting held in
the San Frantisco offices of the
“alifothia State Chamber of Commerce. Ledi stated, the committee
unanimously went on record a6 unalterably opposed to this increase m
the acreage of the Spaulding Refuge.
“To increase the size of this refuge,” Lodi declared, ‘would only
serve to increase wild fowldepredations on growing crops of the Sacramento Valley. As: an alternative,
the Wildlife Management Committee is strongly recommending establishment by the State Fish and
Game Commission and Federal Wild
life Service of a series of smaller
refuges extending throughout the
Sacramento and San Joaquin jV alleys,
where feed can be .grown or otherwise provided. This would have the
effect of dispersing the ducks and
geese who are so extensively damaging our growing crops, particularly
rice, and would afford the farmers
more opportunity to protect themselves aganst such depredations.”
In: its discussions of the problem,
Lodi stated, the committee consider
ed resolutions which were presented
opposing the proposed purchase by
the board of supervisors of Colusa
County, a telegram by the board of
supervisors in Glenn County. and a
letter of protest filed by Wright L.
Calender, Willows attorney.
The Joint Wildlife . Management
Committeé headed by Lodi is composed of fifteen agricultural and
sportsmen’s organizations, as well as
members of the state legislature, and
representatives of the USDA War
Board and other organizations interested in reducing crop losses occasioned by wild fowl depredations.

AFFECTS STEERING
Faulty front wheel alignment is
condemned largely on the ground
that it results in abnormal tire wear.
There is no questioning the accuracy
of the charge, states the Public Service Department of the National Automobile Club, but it should be remembered that this deficiency also
means harder steering. Check the
wheels the next time the car is difficult to turn.
Only two states in the nation permit sale of wine direct from barrel
to consumer’s jug.
