a FRIDAY, MAY 10, 1935. THE NEVADA CITY NUGCET WARM POOL FOR SICK CHILDREN AT U. C. HOSPITAL SAN FRANCISCO, May 9.-—The University of California has its own “Warm Springs’’ pool for the treatiment of infantile paralysis and other fliseases. Thé pool is in constant. use, for_its value is well recognized and the number of patients needing such, treatment under careful direction is very great. The pool is an indoors . affair: ‘brightly lighted by the sun and attractively set in the new division of the University Hospital in San Francisco. The water used is not naturally warm. It comes into San. Francisco from the snow-blanketed Hetch Hetchy. It is chemically treated to imsure its containing freshness and PET SHOW COMES TOMORROW P. M. The dkammar school pupils are all raring to go! The pet show is set for Saturday, tomorrow, at 2 ps ™m. Their pets are )eing pampered and polished for éxhibit. The committee has issued the following rules so that all will be orderly and according to schedule. All dogs must be on leash. Cats and other animals are to be in cages, Substitutes must be present to care for animals of children taking part in the program, Ps All cages must have the name of pet and owner's “name printed on it. The exhibits must be at the school not later than two o'clock, tomorrow. ° The eighth grade pupils have planned two very clever side shows. purity and it is heated to a conSstantly maintained temperature of $6 degrees. An unceasing inflow and outflow are provided, inSuring con. . tinuqus change of water with ade-: guate filtration. The dimensions of the pool are small, as compared to the average : swimming pool, the deepest portion . and’ the shallowest Qortion being 4% feet and 3% feet, respectively, at “bieh “tide” Like the Warm Springs pool, it has proved its usefulness. Not only does this pool tena to alleviate. the sufferings and aid the treatment of many infantile paralysis patients, but it is of value im the treatment of crippled bed-ridden patients who have arthritis or other chronic diseases. Once in the pool, the warmth and buoyaney of the water often re-$ moves the stress and pain of walking and gives the sick a grip on themselves that they can obtain in no other way. The therapeutic advantages of this treatment have also been proved for mental and nervous sufferers, the soothing effect of the clear warm water is often immedjate. ; Helpless patients are lowered into the pool and taken out by a mechanical contrivance resembling the basket trolleys formerly used in department stores. The patient is first placed on a long board attached to the trolley. Then he is swung to the edge of the pool, and immersed, ! board and all. A physical therapist in the pool . Bi i with the patient, gives necessary aid ; and careful direction. By a reverse} process the patient is taken from . the pool. Thereafter he is carried . onthe trolley into any one of al number of private alcoves for fur-j ther treatment, before he is return-! ed to the ward or room. The people are always in a hurry; ; sefore they start for the place they are going They have figured out the minimum time it will take to get back. But if you look doubtful And ask the way to the nearest grocer They smile And go-part way. with you. Not all: of them, of course. Who wants a crowd? Oregonians are fine. people. Their streets are never dry, And. their houses are subject To mildew. But they are cheerful. They talk about dry rains. ! like California. ; She has the oldest trees in the world, The tallest trees, The widest-girthed trees, The most treezy trees anywhere.
