Our city fathers we believe are
convinced the innovation is all-to the
good, and many a shopper fronr~the
suburban area undoubtely finds the
meters a useful and time saving Aevice. But still. when a merchant
tells us his busine-s has fallem off
hecause of them, that his custom-re
drive on the Grass Valley, whooshand consider. Grass Valley men-“hants
have said they hope the parking
meters will stay in Nevada City and
the Grass Valley City Council seems
to be waiting and lstening as contrasted with the time it was hot on
the project of putting them in. Then
came a pause. Perhaps someone
said: “Let Nevada City do ar first.”’
The pros and cons of parking
meters, at any rate have been wel!
debated. There is just one umpire
who can make the decision; and that
is the people of this city. If a majority. wants them, they are worth
while. If a majority objects, they
should be taken out at-the end of the
experimental period of six months.
That was the basis on which the
city council agreed to gZive the meters a trial. And there is‘no way of
telling for sure Whether the majority
is for or against them. The streeis
belong to all the taxpayers and they
should have the say-so.
—
Chief of Police Solaro states that
the vacant parking spaces are now
largely occupied. by . out-of-towners
and tourists. The suburban folks
come in to do their shopping and can
readily find a place to park. For
two or thre pennies they can park
their car conveniently.. eomplete
their business and be on their war.
As the Centennial Celebration gets
under way Nevada City will need
mlenty of parking «ace for *“ the
thousands of visitc-who will come
here during the rext’ two ‘or three
years. If we have paring meters’
they will have a good chance of finding parking space and we think our
Merchants will benefit.
Another angle in the parking
metér tproject is that the ‘city is
making 4 clear profit of more than .
improvements on which money
should be spent, The streets are always with us, always wearing -out,
always needing repairs and, in some
cases, rebuilding. The Nevada City
Ainport which belongs to all -taxpayers, needs constant improvement
to build it up to. the modern landins

so far as ah is concerned,
but after it is installed money will
be needed for maintenance, and that
will have to be raised Dy taxes.
Go lets take a good look at parking meters as a much needed source
of revenue before we go‘to the polis
and vote for or against, two or three
months from now. After all” here is
a way of taxing the sojourner as
well s local residents, and, by now,
most sojourners, are quite accustomed to parking meters, which are becoming almost as common through:
out the state as hitching posts were
in the old days.

find that the amount of their monthars check has been increased or de. creased.
Veterans Administration is reviewing all disability compens&tion
awards umder the new rating schedule established by congress in 1945.
Umtil the new schedule went into effect. most awards were being paid
under .rating schedules established
by congress in 1933 and 19215.
VA also considers the current conGition of the veteran’s disability
when determining his new rating for
compensation punpases.
" Aibout 2155 per cent of the: awards
tbeing paid to NortHern California
veterans have already been reviewed by VA. Of this number, 40 per
cent were decreased, 20 per cent incréased and 40 per cent not changed.
VA estimatee that nearly a year
will be required to review. remaining awards in Northern California.
Tncreases in awards resulting
from the 1945 rating schedule will
be retroactive to April 1, 1946. ~
The review is automatic. VA requests that disabled veterans do not
make inquiries about their cases
while they are pending.
