Coronation ‘Commentary Crowning a king! What stupendous pageantry! Gold carriages drawn by many ‘pairs of prancing gray steeds—ritualistic rites steeped in tradition centuries old — princes and potentates from a!] lands garbed in jewelled robes, in top hats or uniforms or silk court dress — everywhere the cheering multitudes. What glorious pomp and ceremony!! Or would you say, instead, ““What fuss and feathers!”’ In any case, even though the royal tradition and symbolism leave Ameri‘ans unimpressed, we'll have to admit that the British are putting on a spectacle more than worthy of old Barnum himse!f. And there is method in the madness of. the multi-million-dollar crowning of His Majesty, King George VI, the costliest and showiest coronation in the history of monarchs. Edward left the throne in a rather shaky condition. Mussolini has badly jolted British prestige. And about the last thing Britain can afford in ,this war-threatened world right now is dissolution of the bonds of empire. Thus the throne, the strongest bond, must be restored at all costs to its place in the sun. ...Americans now in London are doubtless enjoying the show. Bui.as for the homage to titles and royalty—well, our citizens are probably more appreciative than ever of the wisdom GeorgeWashington showed when he refused the offer of his countrymen, during revolutionary days, ‘to make him King George . of America.—Contributed. The Hindenburg Tragedy In the flaming heap of .twisted wreckage marking a tragic journey’s end for the giant dirigible Hindenburg and the many victims aboard her, there perished also the belief that men had made the skies safe for lighter-than-air craft. This newest and largest of zeppelins was considered as invulnerable as an ocean liner. It was the final triumph after the pioneering years during which many lives had been sacrificed in dirigible disasters. : But the tiny spark, or whatever it was, did its deadly work, and the Hindenburg joined the Shenandoah, the Akron and the Macon in the graveyard of lost dirigibles. Whether or not they discover the primary cause of the catastrophe, the secondary cause, inflammable hydrogen gas instead of non-burnable helium, is so obvious that it will forever end the use of hydrogen as the lifting agent. Perhaps the Hindenburg was virtually invulnerable in al! other respects. If so, this lesson, °ostly for one so obvious, may prove a final step toward the long-sought goal. In any case, new zeppelins are building and more will be built. Dirigible development will go onIf there can be any consoling factor in anything so ap-. Hing as the disaster that struck at Lakehurst, it is that the possibility is now more remote for such a thing ever to happen again.—Contributed. Remember that about Rumford! know about the care economic depression. While the study includes the selfhelp units of the state, Dr. Pauunzio points out that these organizations saved the taxpayers of Les Angeles eounty alone some $860,000 during the year of 1934. During the “past two years the savings has been less because of reduced numbers and ‘operations. He says it is becoming increasingly difficult for men over ae forty five years of age to obtain employment in industry, and that the self-help units may become of substantial advantage to the community in mitigating the problem of giving employment to these people. The psychological advantage to unenmployed people through self-help as against charity is of great value to the community, he states. He points out that the federal, state and county governments should encourage the more efficient units with grants and loans, and to foster their sense. of independence: NUGGET ADS PAY “What every e-maker should er hands’ A practical, every-day problem, discussed in a helpful way by Jane Barton, at the Homecraft Institute.
