DAYS HAS HOME
IN SOU. FRANCE
Last week a mention was made
of Emma Nevada, internationally
famous opera singer, who was born
at the ghost town of Alpha. Very
few people in Nevada City know that
the home of Mr, E, T. R. Powell on
Pine street at the northern end of
the Gault bridge was built largely
from the lumber taken in the razing
church in this city.
This church was built in 1850 and
was the building in which the voice
of the great singer was first heard.
She was born,Emma Wixom, at
Alpha eastern Nevada county, ana:
later moved to Nevada City with her
parents. Dr. and Mrs. Jack Wixom.
She took the fame “Emma Nevada”
that she might honoi this city and
the state of Nevada, for she moved
with her parents to Austin, Nevada,
when a small girl. After graduating
Mills Oakland, she
went to Europe where. she made her
operatic debut in London in 1880.
This famed native of Nevada county.
is still living in southern France.
