SRA RELIEF IN
NEVADA COUNTY
DROPS 66 PCT.
The number of cases dependent on
SRA in Nevada County on March 31
was just, over oné third the number
on the roll on March 31, 1940, according to a study of the case load
of the SRA in California counties
at the close of each month during
the past year, made public today by
. California Taxpayers’ Association.
;On March 31, 1941, the SRA case
load in the county was 75 which is
ing state relief to unemployed employables in the county on the same
date one year ago.
Over the state as a whole, the case
load of the SRA on March 31, 1941,
was less than half its size a year before ,the association found. On Mar.
31, 1941, the state load was 42,625
which was 44 per cent of the 96,163
case load for. the same date in 1940.
Comparing the aumber of persons receiving relief during March
of each year, the association found
that in 1941 less than half.as many
persons were dependent on the SRA
as in March of 1940—the numbers
being 174,007 for 1941 and 366,472
for 1940. A case, the association exPlained may be one or several persons making up a family, and may
receive aid for all or part of a month.
“During March, employment
throughout the United States increased by 934,000, much-of the increase
being made in California where many
of the defense industries are located. In February the gain in the numbers employed nationally amounted
to 385,000,” the association pointed
out. “With the expansion of defense
work, and the general pick up in
business activity, jobs ‘should be
pendent on the SRA—persons who
are employable. Only employable ununder the SRA.
“The state is spending about $79,000,000 during the present two year
period for the SRA. In addition, the
legislature has before it a proposal
to appropriate $38,706,295 for the
coming two years.”’ the association
stated, pointing out that no effort
should be spared to get jobs for the
42,625. employable persons who made
up. the SRA case load on March 31,
1941. ‘‘With the people on SR'A back
to work, one of the most costly activities of state government in California could be done away with.”

BLISTER RUST
SACRAMENTO, May 12.—An inerease to one hundred fifty workers
who will be assigned by WPA to
field work in the control of white
pine blister rust was announced yesterday by Kenneth IR. Walker of
Westwood, chairman of the Natural
‘Resources Committee of the Sacramento Valley ‘Council, California
Originally the quota for control
work was established at fifty worers for the balance of the current
fiscal year, but this quota was so inadequate for proper control work
that strong representations were
made to the WPA administrator concerning the need for additional workers if the program is to be carried
on in any effective manner. As a result of these representations Walker
said, “The quota of workers has
been increased to the one hundred
seventy five total, twenty five men
being assigned for office: and labortory work.”
