Gray 520 Coyote Street Phone 16 NEW YORK, May 12.—BUSINESS —What can be done to get business going again and the wheels of industry turning? That question is. on many lips these days. Figures on private’ investment in securities reveal one sore spot that must be healed. Stocks and bonds are sold primarily to providé money for building new factories or enlarging existing factories thus providing work for many people.‘Bast month only $13,800,000 worth of new stocks and bonds were sold, lowest sind November, 1935. In; April;:1937;--$177< 000,000 worth of new securities were issued. The way things are going now it is likely. that less than $400,000,000 will be invested in industry this year. Compare this: with the $2,835,400;000 investment figure of 1926, or the $3,667,800,000 figure of 1929, or even the $1,369,400,000 figure of 1937. In other words, the average adult put. $35 of his 1926 savings into new stocks and bonds, FARuRARURLRARURLRRRARR while this year the figure will be in the neighborhood of only $5. BOWLS OF movement ever RICE—The biggest undertaken in the United States to aid suffering non-. combatants of a war stricken country was launched last week by the United Council for Civilian Relief in China, headed by Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. On June 17, in hundreds of cities and towns, ‘thousands of Americans will participate in a national Bowl of Rice dinner and ball, the proceeds from. which will be used to send food and medical supplies to more than 30,000,000 Chinese civilian refugees. THINGS TO WATCH FOR — A grocery bag that automatically closes itself when filled. An alarm attachment for automatic milking machines that whistle when. the cow has been milked dry, A device which crushes old razor blades into powder for convenient disposal. A combination tooth brush and syringe which rinses teeth while it scrubs. A payroll satchel which discharges tear gas when snatched out of a messenger’s hand. Some of the 27,762,009 new coins, valued at . $1, 001,212, minted by the U. S., treasury during April. CONSUMERS VICTORY — A three void, would have compelled a merchant owning a.cash and carry store and a self service store to charge the Same prices in all of his stores. He would have been unable to pass on to his costumers the savings resulting from lower operating costs in some stores. The court ‘held “such price differentials have been regarded as beneficial to the public and not harmful to any one.” Consumers were hopeful the decision would have . a bearing on similar laws in other states. 4 CLIPPER SHIPS DELAYED Mrs. R. Carter received an airmail letter from her son, Will Carter in the Philippine Islands in which he stated they had had no mail in ‘three weeks The clipper ships were delayed in take offs at.San Frantisco because of various difficulties. Two boats were due in Manila on April 23 with 2,300 bags of mail. Mr. and Mrs. Carter and son left this city about three years ago and are getting along nicely in the new gold mining field where Mr. Carter holds an. excellent position. CAMPTONVILLE, May 14.—Lola B. Cleveland was the recent winner of an Emerson radio in the Camay soap contest. George Williams and hrother Bill left Thursday .for their home at Berkeley after a few days visiting their old home here. Mrs. Rachael M. Labadie and Mrs. J. W. Morehead returned Tuesday from a two weeks visit’ at Richardson Springs.
