Middle Class Growth
In South America
BERKELEY, May 20—The continued growth ‘of the middle classes in Latin America will be of greater aid to western hemisphere ‘unity
than any artificial attempts to proMote good will, according. to Dr:
Henbert E. Bolton. Sather professor
of history emeritus at the University
of California.
This rising class
not
says Bolton does
have the ties to Burope which
found in the groups that have
controlled the southern nations politically in the past and are increasinigly alert to the vecessity for working together within the hemisphere.
hn
As the middle class becomes an
even more potent force in the national affairs of their individual
countries their common aims will
make for increasing ‘cooperation
among nations. Bolton believes. He
point out that the development closely parallels the growth of our social and economic system.

This fool’s cap fits none of my
nephews, least of all you, who
learned during the war that the easy
way to save part of your pay ‘was
to sign up on the payroll savings
plan. I am. visiting in Philadelphia
today. Philadelphia is the home of
the Liberty Bell and Benjamin
Franklin, who said a penny saved

alive, he would revise this statement to $3 saved in U. S. Savings
Bonds are $4 in your pockets ten

RAM SALE BIGGEST SUCCESS
IN YEARS
SAIN FRAINCISCO, May 23—The
California Sheep Show and Ram Sale
at the Sacramento (County fair
grounds at Galt last week was probably the most successful since the
sales were started 26 years ago, heedquarters of the California Wool
Growers Association announced today.
‘During the two day auction a total of 1837 head—1517 rams. and
320 ewes were sold for $117,424.50
an average for the sale of $69.08 per
head. Last year 1810 were sold for
-$108,098.50--.an -average--of~ $59-72
per head.
Top prices at this year’s sale was
$650 paid for a Suffolk stud ram.
The ram was consigned by Charles
Howland and sons of Cambridge,
Idaho and was bought by B. B. Burroughs of Cambridge. A Hampishire
stud ram consigned by R. W. Hoge
2nd sons of Salem, Oregon ‘was
bought for $500 by Walter P. Hubbard of Junction City, Oregon.
The largest crowd in the history of
. the sale attended the auction and
' witnessed the Far West International Sheep Dog Trials which preceded the sale. The trials were won by
James Palmer of Dixon with his dog
Tweed. In the younger dog class
Mack owned by George Phillip of
Davis was tops.
SAIN FRA'NCISCO, May 2:'3—The
‘will of the San Francisco voters, expressed last: Novemiber that the farmers free market become a permanent institution was. advanced another step last week when a appropriation of $62,000 for a permanent site
was recommended to the board of
supervisors by Mayor Roger D. Lapham and chief administrative officer Thomas A, Brooks.
The location probably will be in
the south of Market area, adjacent
to the Mission district.
The market which is now located
at Market and Duboce streets, was
started in the summer of 1943 as an
emergenccy outlet for sunplus fruit
and vegetable crops which were perishing due to war time dislocations.
So successful was this experiment
that at the last November election
the voters decreed 5 to 1 that the
market be established’ on a perManent basis and the board of supervisors last month adopted an ordinance to that effect.
