These people may have little influence upon clear thinking
humans, but the art of thinking is still in its infancy and there
are certain undesirable reactions to war talk in the minds of
those who have never really considered the horrors of armed
conflict, and its utter futility as a means of settling mal-adjustments of human relationships. :
‘We celebrated I Am An American week; just what did
we mean by that. Each one of us considers himself a rather
perfect work of nature's art, but just how many ingredients
go into the making of a one hundred per cent American? We
are all of emigrant stock, my ancestors came from one part of
the world, yours from another; but an experienced physiologist looking into our faces could readily tell us how the line
of descent was mixed and from whom we received our features
and our facial contour. We might be surprised if we knew, so
it is not safe to berate any man for his racial characteristics:
for in so doing we might be casting aspersions upon our own
ancient and revered ancestry.

in the history of Nevada County.
Nevada City, as have all of the
towns of our county, suffered many
devastating fires. On March 11.
1851, a great fire laid waste to the
business section of the town and in
it was consumed county and city
records as of that date. In the great
fire of July 19, 1856, the most disastrous fire in the history of this
county, practicaNy all of the records
that ‘had’ escaiped previous destruction were lost,
Wile this town has suff *°d no
generally destructive holocaust since
1863, many places of business and
private residences have been destroyed by fire;.and in their destruction,
documents and other matters of historic. value have been irretrievably
lost.
