Nevada City, as have all of the towns of our county, suffered many devastating fires. On March 11. 1851, a great fire laid waste to the business section of the town and in it was consumed county and city records as of that date. In the great fire of July 19, 1856, the most disastrous fire in the history of this county, practicaNy all of the records that ‘had’ escaiped previous destruction were lost, Wile this town has suff *°d no generally destructive holocaust since 1863, many places of business and private residences have been destroyed by fire;.and in their destruction, documents and other matters of historic. value have been irretrievably lost.
