FIRST LONG-DISTANCE TELEPHONE
{Recited ot the dedication ef a Commemorative Tablet Sunday at French
Corral by Columbia Parlor, N. D. G. W.)
A wonder tale and almost past believing,
Comes downto us! from those brave days of old,
When all the way from French Corral to Bloomfield,
The ancient gravels yielded yellow gold;
The east was boasting of a new contraption—
The Ridge could use’it if the tale were true,
And so the miners sought to understand it
And verify its every detail too.
Then, sturdy labor sped the great achievement,
Some scoffed, ‘‘there’ll never come a day,
When any one in French Corral can listen
To what a voice in Milton has to say.”’
But even doubters helped to string the wires
From little town through roaring camp and mine,
To Alpine lakes that lay serenely smiling
Above the fragrant hills of fir and pine.
And soon a voice in ordinary accents,
Could call the sparkling waters from their source,
Bidding them rush through ditches, flumes and tunnels,
Full sixty miles along a man made course; \
And then at last, forced by hydraulic pressure, \
To roar again into the light of day,
Tearing the gold from earth’s primordial channels,
Doing man’s work in man’s appointed way.
A slender wire to conquer time and distance,
A magic power to serve the needs of man,
And that on rushing flame, the western spirit,
That won success for many a daring plan.
Inspired by memories of this great adventure,
Record the time and dedicate the place,
Where men first stood, their eyes ashine with wonder
And spoke their thoughts through whispering leagues of space.
North San Juan Ridge, this is your magic story,
And French Corral, now may the fact be known;
That here, long years, ago, our men of vision,
Installed the first long distance telephone.
