THE NEVADA CITY NUGGET aemeienieenieiaenents SAN JUANRIDGE LEAGUE MEMBER HOLDS UP IDEAL Improvement; an “Juan i held its regular meeting on Wednesday night with a good attendance of members. Routine business was cared for and problems and plans discussed. A letter from W. H. Robinson, a member who was unable to attend was read. Mr. Robinson’s letter follows: : Once upon a time there was an old man who had seven stalwart sons. These sons were very strong men. One day the father called his seven sons .before him. In his hands he held seven sticks wrapped and tied with stout thongs. He handed this bundle of sticks to his youngest son saying, ‘‘Break these.”’ This son‘tried and tried but he was not strong enough to break the bundle of sticks. The sixth son tried to break the bundle of sticks. Bue he too failed to break them. All the other sons in turn failed to break the bundle of sticks. So the father said, ‘Hand the bundle to me. I will show you how easy it is to break it.” He pulled out his knife and cut the thongs which bound the sticks together. Then he broke each one of the seven sticks. Saying: “See how easy! Thus en if you do not stick together.” We as the North San Juan Ridge Improvement League can learn a lesson from this old fable. “In union there is strength.’ So let us all being bound together by the thongs of membership in the North San Juan Ridge Improvement League remain so tied together as not to let those with their own selfish interests at heart take a knife and cut those thongs. This league should be open to all who’ have thé community’s interest at heart be they property owners, snipers, squatters, or even paupers. But: since dues are paid to gain membership, every one who desires to be and stay a member should be willing to pay his dues. These dues are used as the vote of the people as members decree. So what conld be fairer than this? Our by-laws call for a square deal from man to man. All of us as members should strive to see that we good; that we make not only our community but also our county, our state and our nation a better place for all of us to live in. us to clean up our own dooryards first and then help others to clean up theirs. In this community. as well as in our county, state and nation there are two . distinct classes; one that desires to do right. They wish to build a beter environment for other people and their children, as well as for themselves alone. The other class seems to believe in that old motto: “Bat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.’ They also seem to say with Louis XIV: “After us the deluge.” This deluge is about upon us and can only be averted if all those of the first class join hands in every community, county and state as well as in our nation as a whole. We must strive to do our utmost to make this landof ours the paradise it can be. We have all the natnral_ resources necessary but it is our stupid distribution system that is at fault. Let us hope that all the menibers of the N. S. J. R. I. L. belong to the first class. As such let us stand back of our President for President Roosevelt has shown that he deserves to keep our mation intact, to keep it as a land of the free and the home of the brave It is time for all of us to organize to save our nation from disaster. We have this organization here. If we continue as we have bekun and if we do not cater to the seelfish interests of any person or clique, we can make this league the starter for similar organizations. There will be others use our league as a pattern and thus our influence will become nationwide as you all know the sturdiest.oak grew from a small acorn. As we understand the league it is always open for criticism and if it will not stand criticism it is not worth the paper the by-laws are written on. There was once an old bell that had been silent a long, long time. No one could recall just when they had heard that bell ring. The village children called it ‘the old Dumb Bell.’’ One day an inventor happened along. He made a clapper for ‘‘the Old Dumb Bell.” Thus you as members of the N. R. I. L. have heard the old “Dumb Bell’’ for the first time. It hopes you enjoyed its chimes and that you may gain some inspiration from its tune. A LEAGUE MEMBER.
