Mariposa County which is at the southern terminus of what is termed the Mother Lode, is showing an ' awakening interest in mining this year, reports the Mariposa Gazette which has been consistently; boosting for its mineral resources. If some deep mining could be encouraged in that country it would do a great deal toward putting the gold mining industry in that section on a stable foundation. _ The principal activities in that county are at the Virginia property near Coulterville and the properties _purchased by Belle McCord Roberts, Long Beach newspaper woman. The Virginia which has been taken Over by: Nevada capitalists is making a strong showing in the deyelopment work so far. Frank Zichosh and associates of San Francisco have purchased from Mr. and Mrs. C. A. McCartney, the Sweetwater group consisting of the Gage, Green Quartz, Douty, Crocker and other claims. Development work is now getting under way. George W. Bever is opening up the Gray Eagle property near Coulterville and the Crown Peak near Bagby. The company handling the work is the Butte Boys Consolidated Mining Co., of which Mr. Bever is the president. , A nine foot. ledge is reported opened up on the Crown Peak which shows good. values. Work is to be resumed on the Gold: King property near Coulterville in the near future. John Roberts and J. W. Thompson have bonded their properties in the Coulterville section to outside interests. The Spread Eagle group of claims in the Whitlock district have been transferred from Nick Mullins to T. M. Bains and associates from Colo: rado. The group compries the Spread Eagle, Miners Hope, Monarch, Eimpire, Toll Gate and Mohawk. The Spread Eagle was located in 1854 and has a past production record. Martin Tresidder is in charge of unwatering operations on the properties. ‘AMADOR COUNTY. A mining property near Plymouth is being opened up by the Lopez Mining and Milling Company. Machinery is being brought from Virginia City. The property has been a forMer producer but idle since 1886 James George ig in charge of opeiations. : Drilling tests are being made between Ione and Voleano for cement material which may mean the establishment of an importoant new industry. A 400 acre tract near Voleano is being prospected. California has 4,000,000 hogs, not counting those who drive all over the road on Sunday afternoons. How much — worse it would be if we were born old and had to look forward to growing young and silly. “Blue blood is all right in its way,’’ remarks the observer, ‘‘but it is the fellows with the greenbacks who seem to get along best.’”’ It’s a short lane that has no road_ hog.
