OF SYNDICALISM LAW CONDEMNED By RALPH H. TAYLOR Will California publicly let, down the bars to Communist agitators and the agents of revolution, bent on the overthrow of American government by force and violence? That question today is squarely at issue before the California state legislature, as radicals “and misguided theoritsts intensify their propaganda barrage in an effort to stampede the lawmakers into repealing the state Criminal Syndicalism Act. To every patriotic citizen, who believes in orderly government and rule by ballots rather than bullets, the \challenge is unmistakable. The Criminal Syndicalism Act was enacted to forestall revolutionaries, seeking 'to incite riots and bloodshed and fan the fires of class hatred. There is nothing in the act to menace any law-abiding American, nor is there any labor issue at stake, despite the desperate efforts of radical propagandists to raise the labor shibboleth. Repeal of the Criminal Snydicalism Act would serve the purpose of one group—and one only! It woutd let dowon the bars to aliens and enemies of American. government, who seek to add this nation to the others why fa have repudfated self-deter+ Communistic of Fascist dictatorships. For a clear understanding of the issue, it is necessary only to analyze the provisions of the act in queStion. The Criminal Syndliealism Act has two salient provisions.First, it makes it a crime to seek the overthrow of American government by “force and violence.’’ Certainly there can be no quarrel with that provision, if one believes in orderly government, looking to the vote of the people for its authority. Second, it makes it a crime knowingly to affiliate with any organization which advocates the overthrow of, government “by force and violenece.’”?’ And again, in light of the definite evidence that scores of radical and communistic groups have been formed for the avowed purpose of destroying popular government in America, it is difficult to understand why loyal citizens should oppose a measure designed to stamp) out subversive influences. Thomas J. Riordan, state commander of the American Legion, makes this significant ‘comment regarding the present drive to repeal the Criminal Sydicalism Act: “Mfforts will undoubtedly be made to clothe the move for repeal of the Criminal Syndicalism Act with respectability by classing it as a ‘liberal measure,’ and by. the false charge that the present act makes it a crime to be a member of a political party. _But ' the law-abiding citizen cannot afford to be deceived. Any California citizen has complete freeparty he may desire—so long as that party is not committed to the overthrow of American government by force and violence.” California citizens probably know . any tained. these ped their revolutionary for the methods of the agents better than most classes, attempt to incite ‘direct action’ have been made in the farming areas over Hooper ents act as reservoirs of infection of relapsing medical agencies also helped to upset a theory that the spirochetes of relapsing cate pe ms Se oe ae DYNAMIC! .
